PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to undertake a variety of rescues using different items of equipment that are not motorised. He/she will identify and describe the equipment, explain its use in the appropriate context, perform the rescues practically at a good standard and undertake an appraisal of their own performance. The qualifying learner is expected to perform these activities with responsibility, efficiency and insight.

The training of lifeguards to perform the function of ensuring safety in the aquatic environment is essential to the discharge of their duties. The achievement of superior skills will benefit the sport and recreation sub-fields greatly as the public enjoys the benefits of improved performance.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Identify and describe the equipment used in rescues.
  • Explain the contexts within which each piece of identified equipment is used.
  • Perform all rescue simulations specified at a good standard.
  • Evaluate own performance in executing the rescues. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Personal water competence sufficient to swim 400 metres in the aquatic environment within a specified time.
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Basic lifeguarding skills.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and describe the equipment used in rescue.

    All equipment other than that which is motorised.

    All lifeguarding equipment to be used is identified and named correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The parts of each item of equipment are identified and their functions are explained in relation to the complete piece of equipment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the contexts within which each piece of identified equipment is used. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes box line, RTB, rescue board, spinal board and any other items of equipment in general use at the time of assessment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The strengths and weaknesses of each item of equipment are discussed in respect of the circumstances of the rescue. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A description is given of how each piece of equipment is used in retrieving the patient. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The preferred item of equipment is correctly identified in response to questions in the form of scenario outlines. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform specified rescue simulations.

    The correct choice of equipment is made, consistent with the simulation utilised. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Correct use of the equipment in a rescue is demonstrated according to organisational policy.

    Correct and careful handling of the patient is undertaken during a rescue. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Evaluate the performance in executing the rescues.
