PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to care for and maintain non-motorised and non-electronic lifeguarding equipment practically. The qualifying learner is expected to understand the vital importance of maintaining equipment in superb working condition in order to handle emergency situations effectively, and the possible dependence of human lives on the effective care for and maintenance of equipment.

The effective maintenance of lifeguarding equipment should ensure more professional services, to the advantage of the public who will derive benefits thereby, as well as the sub-fields of sports and recreation as a whole.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Understand the operation of equipment used in lifeguarding.
  • Handle the equipment with care in the aquatic environment.
  • Effectively maintain and repair lifeguarding equipment.

    Understand the operation of equipment used in lifeguarding.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A manual of equipment used by the association/body is drawn up with hand drawn diagrams and labeling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Each item of equipment is explained and its use demonstrated practically. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Handle the equipment with care in the aquatic environment/area of operations.

    Care is taken in the use of equipment as per operating manuals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment is stored effectively and safely according to organisational policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Effects of the environment on the life of the equipment are explained, and practical steps are taken to maximise equipment lifespan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Routine Maintenance is performed and after use of the equipment and outside maintenance schedules adhered to.

    Effectively maintain and repair lifeguarding equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A planned maintenance log for recording maintenance and repair of equipment is produced and used according to organizational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A contact list of equipment suppliers, manufacturers and repairers who may be called upon to carry out equipment maintenance is produced and used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Planned maintenance of equipment is demonstrated practically in a lifeguarding context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Repair of equipment is demonstrated in a lifeguarding situation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A glass/resin repair of an item of craft equipment.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed against this Unit Standard (including through RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
