PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to assist as a crewman in a motorised aquatic rescue craft and also undertake a variety of aquatic rescues from the craft. The benefit to the individual will be the understanding of the context and complexities of such rescues, being able to perform the rescues using the craft as a base, and being able to undertake an appraisal of own performance. This will build on the lifeguards skills and abilities, thus making them more employable. The training of lifeguards to perform the function of undertaking rescues from a motorised craft in the aquatic environment is a crucial addition to the range of life guarding skills. The mastery of these skills will benefit the sub-field greatly as the public enjoys the benefits of an extended service.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:

    The general specifications of the craft are described as they pertain to its use for lifeguarding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The normal use of the motorised craft is identified in terms of aquatic use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Typical behaviour of the craft in a variety of conditions is explained in view of the role of a crewman. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Circumstances under which the motorised craft would be used for rescues are described. With examples of unsuitable and suitable use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Assistance with necessary procedures is afforded the driver. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Act as crewman in a motorised rescue craft. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The role of a crewman on a motorised aquatic rescue craft is outlined in terms of standard lifeguarding practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The main functions of a crewman are demonstrated in appropriate conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Communication with the driver of the craft is conducted according to organisational policy and standard protocols. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment used by the crewman is identified, located, utilised, and re-stored for future use. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Assist with the launch and initial approach to the patient. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    The driver is assisted with placing and removing the craft from its trailer and with the launching. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The driver is alerted to any perceived hazards en route to the rescue location. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Necessary communication is maintained with the base station. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The location of the patient is established and this is communicated to the driver. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The driver is assisted in positioning the craft carefully in relation to the patient. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Conduct an aquatic rescue from the craft.

    A rescue method is selected which is most appropriate to a situation and prevailing conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Entry into the water is concluded in a position, manner and speed most appropriate to the patient and other relevant issues.

    The patient is supported and secured according to standard rescue techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The priority needs of the patient are attended to on the return leg. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The patient is assisted into and from the craft in the manner best suited to the situation and patient and weather conditions.

    Maintenance procedures are followed to ensure readiness of all relevant equipment related to the craft.

    Logbook entries are completed in line with organisational policy.

    A self-appraisal of performance is undertaken and integrated into future procedures where appropriate.
