PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to undertake maintenance of a motorised aquatic rescue craft and will be capable of driving and operating it effectively in conducting rescues. He/she will understand the context and complexities of aquatic rescues, be able to work with a crewman to facilitate the completion of such rescues practically at a good standard, and undertake an appraisal of their own performance. The training of persons capable of maintaining and driving a motorised rescue craft in the aquatic environment is a crucial addition to the range of lifesaving skills, indicating the benefit to the individual. The mastery of these skills will benefit the sub-field greatly as the public enjoys the benefits of an extended service.

The outcomes to be achieved by the learner are to:
  • Understand the operational capabilities of the craft.
  • Ensure regular maintenance of the motorised rescue craft.
  • Drive and navigate the craft under various conditions.
  • Handle and manoeuvre the craft in the conduct of rescues.

    Ensure regular maintenance of the motorised rescue craft.

    A regular maintenance programme is followed and a log of maintenance activities is provided per organisational policy.

    Driving is undertaken with and without a co-crewman as appropriate to context and conditions.

    A variety of obstacles are successfully negotiated as could be expected to be encountered.

    Handle and maneuver the craft in the conduct of rescues.

    The craft is driven skillfully to the location of a patient.

    The craft is held steadily in close proximity while an aquatic rescue is carried out.

    The craft is manoeuvred to ensure a safe pick-up of the patient.

    The patient and crew are returned safely to a suitable landing site.
