PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will have acquired a range of essential skills and capacities necessary for the saving of lives through the dedicated application of rescue breathing and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation with a variety of patients as applicable.

The unit is focused, among other things, on providing a critical role for the professional who in the course of their duties might be expected to respond or the volunteer who wishes to perform a public service. Improvements in performance in the competencies necessary for effective resuscitation can be expected to enhance the quality of service offered by volunteers and others who will function in support of any available professional rescuers. The unit standard can consequently be expected to benefit both the individual and the sub-field greatly.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Describe the structures and functions of the circulatory, respiratory, skeletal and nervous systems as they impact on resuscitation methods.
  • Perform rescue breathing (expired air resuscitation) according to specific standards.
  • Perform Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation for adults, children and infants according to specific standards.

    Describe the structures and functions of the circulatory, respiratory, skeletal and nervous systems as they impact on resuscitation methods.

    The circulatory system is described in terms of the structures and functions of its major components. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The respiratory system is described in terms of the structures and functions of its major components. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The skeletal system is described in terms of its structures and selected functions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Features include the cranium, spine and thorax.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The nervous system is described in terms of the structures and functions of its major organs. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform rescue breathing (expired air resuscitation) according to specific standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Rescue breathing is explained as the most appropriate resuscitation technique when rescuing an apparently drowned patient. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A rescue is undertaken in which rescue breathing is demonstrated in shallow water for a specified duration for an apparent victim of drowning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Patient care is demonstrated when returning the casualty to the nearest dry land. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A report is completed on the incident for use by relevant parties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Specific, industry approved standards, are used in conducting the rescue breathing. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation for adults, children and infants according to specific standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A primary assessment is conducted, with signs and symptoms identified and recorded according to accepted emergency procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Include Hazards, Hello, Help, Airway, Breathing and Circulation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation techniques are demonstrated while undertaken singly and with a team member, according to current international protocols with the use of barrier devices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    CPR mouthpiece, pocket mask.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation techniques are demonstrated for children and infants in terms of accepted protocols, using appropriately sized manikins if necessary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Rescue breathing is explained as the most appropriate resuscitation technique when rescuing an apparently drowned patient. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Choking persons are managed according to internationally accepted protocols. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

    The recovery position is demonstrated to achieve the safety and comfort of the patient.

    A report is completed on the incident for according to organisational requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, with lifeguarding included in their field of application and expertise.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA. They shall be accredited for a learning programme related to the present unit standard.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
  • Therefore, anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution which is accredited by the relevant ETQA, provided they have lifeguarding within their accreditation scope.
