PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to maintain, care for and use communication equipment effectively. The qualifying learner is expected to understand the vital importance of effective communications to handling emergency situations especially, and the possible dependence of human lives on effective care and use of equipment.

The effective use and maintenance of communication equipment should ensure more professional services, to the advantage of the public who will derive benefits thereby, as well as the sub-field as a whole.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Demonstrate the standard operating procedures for hand-held radios.

    Basic transmitting and receiving procedures and call signs are demonstrated using appropriate equipment.

    Pre-activity and post-activity radio communication procedures are demonstrated using appropriate equipment.

    Emergency procedures if a radio has become submerged in water are illustrated using standard practice.
