PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to take all relevant practical steps necessary to transport patients suffering from the effects of incidents experienced in the aquatic environment, so that they are rescued and receive effective after-care. In doing so, the learner will liaise with all role players who might affect the services provided including backup services, in an endeavour to ensure optimum support for the patient. The qualifying learner is expected to perform the necessary functions with responsibility, efficiency and insight.

The training of lifeguards to perform the function of ensuring optimum transport of patients will greatly benefit members of the public who engage in aquatic activities but experience incidents that threaten their well-being or life. This in turn can be expected to benefit the sports and recreation sub-fields greatly.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Identify various types of aquatic incidents a lifeguard might have to respond to.
  • Identify the characteristics, treatment and transport needs of various types of aquatic casualties.
  • Identify and explain the uses of various non-motorised aquatic rescue equipment to effect transport.
  • Respond to a patient and transport him/her to safety unaided by equipment.
  • List actions to take to prevent and manage incidents at aquatic sites.

    Soft tissue injuries, cuts and contusions are described and remediation and transport explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Loss of consciousness from various caused is described and analysed and remediation and transport explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Cramp, exhaustion, hypothermia and hyperthermia are described and remediation and transport explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Spinal and other skeletal injuries are described and their implications for treatment and transport are analysed and explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify the characteristics, treatment and transport needs of various types of aquatic casualties.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The characteristic problems of non-swimmers and weak swimmers are listed and explained in terms of lifeguarding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The characteristic needs of injured swimmers are identified and explained in terms of lifeguarding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Problems attendant on unconscious patients due to uncertain causes are analysed and related to lifeguarding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Issues attendant on an identified drowning casualty are analysed and related to lifeguarding. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify and explain the uses of various non-motorised aquatic rescue equipment to effect transport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The use of a rescue tube, throwing buoy and rescue board are illustrated in a practical demonstration. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A rescue tube recovery is performed, with securing and support to aid a person in distress in the water. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A board rescue is performed, with securing and supporting of the person in distress in the water. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Respond to a patient and transport him/her to safety unaided by equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A one-person drag rescue is performed by one person using standard techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A carry by two persons is performed over a flat area the size normally encountered. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A carry by two persons involving the negotiation of obstructions is undertaken in a natural setting. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    List actions to take to prevent and manage incidents at aquatic sites.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An action plan is drawn up to prevent a range of typical incidents at the aquatic facility or site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An action plan is drawn up to provide survival support and first aid at the aquatic facility or site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An action plan is drawn up to provide effective transport in and outside the aquatic facility or site.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed against this unit standard (including through RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
