PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to introduce the learner to a multi-disciplinary approach to wellbeing. It will develop the skills to care for wellness through the assessment of risk factors and to promote and market wellness programmes through effective strategies utilising Recreation activities and implementing these at workplaces in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Investigating the need to promote physical wellness and personal wellbeing within a contemporary wellness programme in the corporate and public sectors.
  • Examining the relationship between mind/body/behaviour and the impact of short-term and long-term stress on individuals and their environments.
  • Understanding nutrition and examining the relationship between nutrition and disease.
  • Designing and implementing a programme to manage workplace wellness.
  • Developing plans to promote workplace wellness to address organisational needs.
  • Implementing and operating a recreation programme to promote workplace wellness.
  • Collecting and analysing feedback according to organisation protocols and demonstrating a return on investment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is recommended that the learner complete the following unit standards before enrolling for this Unit Standard:

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • In the context of this unit standard, a recreation programme is developed and implemented with the outcome on health education and promotion in a given community. The programme design incorporates the programming philosophy of the organising body, and may make up the overall programme, or total range of programmes, for the organising body for an extended period of time, for example, a season or a year.
  • In the context of this unit standard, a community may pertain to ethnicity, gender, age, geographic boundaries, workplace, special need, or special interest.
  • Health promotion is defined in accordance with and in support of the National Department of Health programmes and initiatives, which are based on the global plan as outlined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States of America working towards healthy people in healthy communities.
  • Wellness at the workplace aligns its programmes to the Employee Assistance Programmes available at the corporate and public sectors.

    The reasons for a company to develop and implement a workplace wellness programme are described.

    Improve the quality of life, short and long term benefits, promoting a positive corporate culture, healthier workplace.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An employee assistance programme is identified as the vehicle to promote wellness within a corporate environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The goals of a wellness programme are determined with the emphasis on prevention, recognition and assistance.

    Risk factors, health related assessments, lifestyle prescription.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The process of becoming physically fit, the physiological benefits of exercise and other positive lifestyle changes are understood and explained with examples.

    Strategies and skills are developed to promote personal wellbeing with the focus on assisting clients make positive lifestyle changes.

    The importance of managing stress is explained and the consequences of not managing stress are explained with the focus on the individual.

    The benefits of managing stress are explained in terms of maintaining a healthy life.

    The barriers to reducing stress are described for individual health and well being. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A simple strategy for stress management is presented and described for individuals and communities.

    Understand nutrition and examine the relationship between nutrition and disease.

    The classification of food groups is introduced and discussed within the context of a healthy lifestyle.

    The benefits of healthy eating and tips for healthier eating are tabulated.

    Food-styles, healthy weight and agencies dealing with nutrition are explained focussing on the individual.

    Diseases resulting from poor eating habits are explained.

    Diseases include - cardiac disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension.

    Design and implement a programme to manage workplace wellness.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Workplace wellness targets are identified and described in a programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Techniques to make workplace wellness a priority are utilised and a program is presented to senior leaders within the organisation.

    Basic marketing principles and how to develop and implement traditional and social marketing plans are produced to spread the messages of the workplace wellness programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Techniques required for implementing and managing organizational wellness programs are outlined. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Programme action plans, scheduling, preparing and tracking budgets, hiring/contracting personnel or vendors, collecting metrics, and reporting outcomes are presented in accordance with operational practices of the organisation.

    Recreation activities are identified for incorporation into the programme design to meet the workplace wellness goals. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Develop plans to promote workplace wellness to address organisational needs. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • To develop a plan the recreation supervisor must use the assessment results and information of the EAP practitioner to develop the goals of a work based.
  • Plans accommodate participants culture, age, gender, sexual preference, physical, spiritual, social, educational, and economic backgrounds and any related diversity need. Participant plans recognize and promotes inclusion throughout the recreation process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A written implementation plan of operation for recreation programs/services is designed in accordance with the department's operational plan. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Plan includes:
  • Vision, mission, objectives, policies and procedures, personnel criteria and practices, protocols and service plans, quality improvement monitors, ethical standards, research and evaluation procedures, safety and risk management directives, scope of service, and mechanisms for program review and participant feedback.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A specific written recreation service plan is prepared which records in the plan of operation, to guide the delivery of specific programs and services and the inclusion of participants in the recreation process.

    Contents of the plan includes:
  • Goals, objectives, facilitation, techniques and interventions, leadership and supervision strategies, resources, safety and risk procedures, quality improvement monitors, formative and summative evaluation measures and participant feedback mechanisms.

    An intervention plan is described and developed with the partnerships.

    Plan includes - referral information, assessment and progress data, participant diagnosis and needs, goals, objectives, outcome measures, restrictions, contraindications, limitations and precautions, facilitation techniques and interventions employed, referral, discharge, aftercare, and follow-up criteria, quality monitoring and evaluation criteria, and safety and risk protocols.
