PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners in the field of law enforcement who will be able to demonstrate understanding of the vehicle identification process with special references to types of vehicles. They will be able to explain the basic pointers of vehicle identification as well as identify vehicles in line with investigation processes.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Describe types of motor vehicles.
  • Examine the basic points of vehicle identification.
  • Assess vehicle identification in relation to the investigation process.

    Describe types of motor vehicles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The term motor vehicle is explained in relation to its definition as stated in the current National Road Traffic Act. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Motor vehicle must also include vehicle, miscellaneous vehicles and car.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Motor vehicles are categorized according to the make, model, series and type. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The terms "manufacturers", "builders" and "importers" are explained in relation to their role within the vehicle identifications process.

    Examine the basic points of vehicle identification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The identification numbers of vehicles are explained in terms of current legal prescripts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Legal required identification numbers must include VIN/Chassis number, Engine/machine number, Licence plates and Licence disc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Other possible identification numbers or marks on vehicles are examined for the purpose of vehicle identification. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Other possible identification numbers or marks may refer to but is not limited to Window numbers, General appearance, Municipal numbers, Markings, Leads and personal owner identification marks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    SAPVIN and unique numbers are examined in terms of their purpose. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    SAPVIN refers to South African Police Vehicle Identification Number.

    The purpose of note taking is explained in terms of evidential value.

    Crimes related to vehicles are assessed to support the identification and investigation processes.

    Crimes refer to but are not limited to Common Law offences (such as theft, fraud and robbery) and Statutory offences (such as The National Road Traffic Act and The Second Hand Goods Act).
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual who wishes to be assessed against this unit standard (including assessment of RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA. Assessors must be competent in the outcome of the Unit Standard.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
