PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners achieving this unit standard will have a fundamental understanding of the application of Air Power with particular reference to the concepts. Learners from other Military Services will be able to utilize the content of specific outcomes in the context of their approach to the execution of operations where Air Power is required.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the evolution of Air Power. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Air Power includes a fundamental knowledge of the genesis of flight and the use of aircraft and/or the ability to fly for the purpose of its use in war up to the present century. The concept of Space Power is excluded. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The fundamental principles of flight are explained with reference to the concept of aerodynamics. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principles include the forces acting against an aircraft in flight, control surfaces, aircraft attitudes and speed.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Key stages in the development of flight are identified and explained in terms of their importance for the development of Air Power. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stages include:
  • Feathered flight hot air balloons, gliding, powered flight.

    The development of an Air Power capability in South Africa is explained with reference to the history (historical role) of the South African Air Force and the (subsequent) integration of other statutory and non-statutory forces. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The macro-organization and design of the SA Air Force are explained with reference to their emerging roles and needs over time. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    The explanation must be supported using simple organigrams.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The nature of war and armed conflict are explained in accordance with SAAF doctrine using examples from a given conflict. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Air Power is explained from the perspective of the core capabilities, using examples from actual conflicts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The application of Air Power principles during operations is explained using examples from specific conflicts, and in line with SAAF doctrine.

    Explain the factors that influence or impact the application of Air Power. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The role played by the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) in the application of Air Power is explained using particular scenarios, and the SAAF response to LOAC. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The role of Air Power in Peace Support Missions is explained by using real-time theatres of activity that the SA Air Force has been involved in during the last decade. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    The description of the role of Air Power in Peace Support Missions draws on examples of SA Air Force involvement in real-time theatres of activity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The influence of the components and principles of Air Power are discussed in relation to the executive decisions and functions of Mobile Air Operations Teams (MAOT). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The role Aviation Safety plays as a force multiplier in the context of Air Power is explained using examples, in line with SAAF doctrine. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The role includes serviceability, safety, availability of aircraft, types of aircraft, health of crews.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any provider offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as an ETD Provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • This unit standard will be assessed by an assessor and moderated by a moderator registered with the relevant accredited ETQA.
  • An assessor should be in possession of a relevant qualification that is at least one level higher than the level of this unit standard.
  • Training Providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    An understanding of how aircraft fly will lead to a higher appreciation of the components of Air Power and the skill of military aviators in tactical and general scenarios.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, focus assessment on each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Although this Unit Standard is very knowledge based, assessment activities should include the context of the CCFO's.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgments should be made. In most cases knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of demonstrated knowledge. As a guide based on the notional hours a candidate has to prepare for the assessment, a repeat assessment should be conducted only once.
