PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will equip a member to function as a commissioned officer in the SANDF.

The member will be prepared for the personal commitment that is expected of a commissioned officer, a commitment to professionalism and the maintenance of high personal standards.

The unit standard will instil the attributes of officership in the member and will give him the opportunity to display a commitment to the purpose of the profession of arms and officership.

Qualifying learners will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of officership.
  • Apply command in terms of conducting missions and achieving objectives.
  • Apply professionalism contributing towards the military culture.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The significance of the deed of commission is explained in accordance with military culture and historical development within the concept of the Profession of Arms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responsibility of being commissioned, as an officer by the President of the RSA, is explained in terms of the Deed of Commission. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role of officers is differentiated from that of others ranks in terms of their functions and responsibilities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Military ethical conduct is explained as applied by commanders and staff officers. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Military ethical conduct refers to, but is not limited to, military ethical decision making, conduct of operations, maladministration, corruption, and careerism.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Actions to maintain a positive morale and discipline of self and subordinates are demonstrated with reference to organisational prescripts.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Professional conduct is described with reference to the expectations, accountability, norms and values as defined in relevant organisational prescripts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Organisational prescripts include but are not limited to the Military Code of Conduct, Batho Pele principles, DOD vision, mission and stated norms and values and prescripts for officers and personal creeds.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The attributes of an officer in creating and upholding the organizational culture are demonstrated in terms of SANDF prescripts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Attributes refer to commitment to serve society, achievement of a goal, care of subordinates, leadership, preparedness, unselfishness, discipline, dependability, loyalty, co-operation, gentlemanly and ladylike conduct.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The military forms of address are applied according to the organisational prescripts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Conduct is demonstrated in terms of functions, customs, protocols and dress codes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Dress code includes military and civilian regulations.
  • Functions includes but are not limited to formal mess evenings, funerals, weddings, parades and public places of entertainment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The significance of forms of recognition of achievements is explained in accordance with DOD prescripts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Forms of recognition includes but is not limited to medals, decorations and certificates.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any provider offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as an ETD Provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • This unit standard will be assessed by an assessor and moderated by a moderator registered with the relevant accredited ETQA.
