PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to prepare sawn diamond gemstones for processing. This process is known as preparation.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the equipment and tools used to prepare diamond gemstones and describe their application.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for polishing.
  • Set and clamp diamond gemstones for preparation.
  • Prepare diamond gemstones for processing.
  • Conduct post-preparation cleaning, checking and security activities.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector, particularly in the aspect of beneficiation.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of the diamond processing industry in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • Polish and/or block diamond sawn diamond gemstones.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    This unit standard applies to persons preparing uncomplicated sawn diamond gemstones under general supervision, or where the person performing the activity deals with complicated sawn diamond gemstones only under close direction of a supervisor.

    Identify the equipment and tools used to prepare diamond gemstones and describe their application.

    The tools and their components used are identified and their use in different applications is explained in terms of key features, applications and methods for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Practices are explained to maintain good housekeeping, safety in the workplace and care of equipment in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of deviating from workplace specific practices are described in terms of potential impact on health, safety, equipment, products and productivity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for polishing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Problems that can be encountered when polishing four point sawn stones are described in terms of types of problems, key features, implications for polishing and methods to overcome such problems. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The types of problems that can be encountered must include:

    Methods to minimise the effects of problems in diamond gemstones are explained in terms of optimising the properties of the resultant polished gemstone. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Optimising the properties of the resultant polished gemstone must include:
  • Weight.
  • Colour.
  • Shape.
  • Proportion.
  • Clarity.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Faceting hints and techniques for preparing four point sawn stones are explained in terms of different applications and the consequences of using inappropriate preparation techniques. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Set and clamp diamond gemstones for preparation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and applied according to required standards of occupational health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Sawn stones received are checked to ensure the appropriate pot has been selected. Inappropriate selection is dealt with in terms of workplace specific procedures. Appropriate selections are set in polishing tangs or claws for preparation according to workplace specific operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A scaiffe is ensured to have been correctly prepared for preparing sawn stones, before putting the stone on the scaiffe. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The polishing tang is set on the appropriate grain settings for the preparation activity required. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Prepare diamond gemstones for processing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Sawn stones are prepared using the appropriate methodology to address the given problem within defined quality and output standards.

    The scaiffe is frequently checked for any defects during the process of preparation. Remedial action is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Weights of diamond gemstones are within the laid down tolerance levels after preparation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Laid down tolerance levels will be found in the employer's:
  • Work specifications.
  • Tariff agreements.

    Conduct post-preparation cleaning, checking and security activities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Diamond gemstones are removed from pots or claws after preparation, cleaned and inspected for quality of finish in relation to workplace specifications. Remedial action, where necessary, is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Good housekeeping is exercised after preparation of diamond gemstones. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • Clean pots, tangs and claws.
  • Replace pots, claws and tangs into correct storage facilities.
  • Maintenance of personal protective clothing and equipment.

    Diamond gemstones are accounted for after preparation in accordance with the workplace security system.
