PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is applicable to people requiring basic knowledge of electronic components and will provide learners with a working knowledge of basic components, their functions, characteristics, rating and application as well as handling thereof in various basic circuits. Learners will be able to conduct the necessary electronic measurements instruments to test readings.

Learners accredited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Using measuring instruments to test readings.
  • Identifying and testing electronic components.
  • Using data sheets to replace components.
  • Operating power and signal sources. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner is competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematics at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Basic electronic components refer to but are not limited to resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes and transistors. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Use measuring instruments to test readings. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Measuring instruments may refer but not limited to OHM-meter, Volt-meter, AMP-meter (Multi-meters: analogue and digital), Logic Probe and Oscilloscope.

    Different measuring instruments are identified for specific measurement purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safe use of measuring instruments is described in order to maintain longetivity of the meters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Measuring instruments are used in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Open and short circuit testing is conducted using instruments. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Testing include but is not limited to continuity, discontinuity and value range.

    Testing of components is conducted to conform to specifications.

    Testing specifications refer to but are not limited to value and polarities.

    Incorrect use of test instruments is stated in terms of the consequences.

    Incorrect uses include:
  • Polarity reversed, use of wrong instrument, incorrect connection to the circuit, incorrect range or function selection, open circuit fuse in fused lead, open circuit test lead.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in this Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the Exit Level Outcome of the Qualification.
  • Moderators should be in possession of a Qualification in Electronics at a minimum of NQF Level 4.
