PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who counsel people in domestic relationships such as couples, partners, families and other domestic units in a variety of situations, but who are not are not registered professionals such as qualified Psychologist and Social Workers. It will be useful for counsellors in a variety of counselling contexts including, but not limited to, schools, Non-Governmental Organisations, Faith Based Organisations, the South African Police Service, Counselling Call Centres, Hospitals, Clinics and Support Agencies, Sports Centres, Education and Training facilities, Government and Health and Social Services facilities. It should develop learners who know their scope of practice, behave ethically in a counselling context, conform to minimum standards and know when to refer a client.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing the different types of domestic units.
  • Explaining the changing nature of a relationship.
  • Counselling a couples or a domestic unit.
  • Referring couples and domestic units with specific needs and problems. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 3 and the Unit Standard, "Counsel an individual in a structured environment", ID 252512. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is domestic relationships including couples, partners, families and other domestic units.
  • Scope of practice refers to the boundaries within which the counselor operates without referral as defined by own work context.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different types of marriage that are recognised in South Africa are investigated with reference to the characteristics, problems and benefits associated with each. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Marriage types include but are not limited to customary, traditional, same sex and common law marriages.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The characteristics of different family and domestic units are described with reference to structure and function. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The influence of culture on the family or domestic unit is explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the changing nature of a relationship.

    Changes in a relationship are explained with reference to the challenges at each stage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Events that may trigger a crisis in a relationship are explained with reference to the relationship, individuals within a domestic unit and the cultural context.

    Counsel a couple or domestic unit.

    Steps to initiate and manage a plan are agreed in order to provide the necessary support.

    Resources and facilities that are available to couples and domestic units with different problems are identified in a selected geographic area.

    The required documents and evidence are produced for a particular referral.
