PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This is a generic Unit Standard for learners in different counselling contexts where clients are enabled to go through the process of finding solutions to their concerns or difficulties. It is intended for learners who not registered professionals such as qualified psychologist and social workers. It will be useful for counsellors in a variety of counselling contexts including, but not limited to, schools, telephone counselling, Non-Governmental Organisations, Faith Based Organisations, the South African Police Service, Counselling Call Centres, Hospitals, Clinics and Support Agencies, Sports Centres, Education and Training facilities, Government and Health and Social Services facilities. It should develop learners who know their scope of practice, behave ethically in a counselling context, conform to minimum standards and know when to refer a client.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the prognosis and treatment options for the most common dread diseases.
  • Researching individual perceptions of illness.
  • Exploring own perceptions of illness as a counsellor.
  • Explaining the basics of crisis counselling.
  • Researching issues relating to disease management.

    It is recommended that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is:
  • The most common dread diseases include cancer, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), heart disease including hypertention, hyperlipidemia, diabetes and Tuberculosis (TB).

    Explain the prognosis and treatment options for the most common dread diseases.

    The nature and prognosis of each dread disease is outlined with reference to possible causes, prevention and treatment.

    The consequences of non-adherence or defaulting on treatment for a dread disease and/or chronic condition are explained with examples.

    Possible referral options are identified for a specific geographical context.

    The concept of a chronic condition is explained with examples.

    Research individual perceptions of illness.

    Different perceptions of illness are explored with reference to causes and cures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Perceptions of illness include but are not limited to indigenous knowledge systems, upbringing, culture, folklore, myths, urban legends and old wives tales.

    The relationship between body and mind is explained with reference to how mind can affect physical well being and visa versa. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The impact of individual perceptions of illness and the mind body link on counselling situations is explained with examples.

    Explore own perceptions of illness as a counsellor.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Own beliefs and ideas about illness are considered with reference to how own thoughts and feelings influence a counselling situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal thoughts and understandings about dread diseases are explored and an indication is given of how own attitudes and bias can affect how a counsellor manages a client. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of a counsellor receiving appropriate supervision is explained in terms of vulnerability and emotional support.

    Explain the basics of crisis counselling.

    The concept of crisis counselling is explained with examples.

    Crisis counselling includes but is not limited to turning points, traumatic events, life decisions or loss.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The stages in dealing with a crisis are identified and an indication is given of emotions associated with each stage and whether the client needs knowledge or support. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Coping styles are discussed with reference to how different individuals experience and deal with a crisis. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Options for positive coping are discussed for a specific client.

    Research issues relating to disease management. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Reports relating to disease management are analysed from the media and an indication is given of how developments could impact on people with a dread disease. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Media includes but is not limited to electronic and print media, radio, television and the Internet.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stories of hope and encouragement relating to a dread disease are discussed in order to empower a client to manage a condition effectively.

  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
