PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for people who counsel specifically in the area of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and in different counselling contexts where clients are enabled to go through the process of finding solutions to their concerns. It is intended for learners who are not registered professionals such as qualified psychologist and social workers. It will be useful for counsellors in a variety of counselling contexts including, but not limited to, schools, telephone counselling, Non-Governmental Organisations, Faith Based Organisations, the South African Police Service, Counselling Call Centres, Hospitals, Clinics and Support Agencies, Sports Centres, Education and Training facilities, Government and Health and Social Services facilities. It should develop learners who know their scope of practice, behave ethically in a counselling context, conform to minimum standards and know when to refer a client.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the progression of the disease.
  • Explaining mother to child transmission.
  • Explaining Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and their relationship to HIV and AIDS.
  • Explaining the relationship of Tuberculosis (TB) to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
  • Investigating possible treatment options and programmes. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is recommended that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 3.

    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is:
  • The most common dread diseases include cancer, HIV and AIDS, heart disease, diabetes and Tuberculosis (TB).

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the progression of the disease. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The nature of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is explained with reference to the virus and how it infects individuals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Theories of where and how the virus originated are investigated from printed and oral sources. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The stages in the progression of the disease are explained with reference to the effect on the immune system and the symptoms associated with each stage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The transmission of the virus is explained with reference to infection and re-infection and the relative risk of the different transmission routes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Transmission routes include blood and body fluids (sharing needles, and needle stick injuries) mother to child and sexual practices.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Ways in which an individual can prevent transmission of the virus are explained with reference to infection and re-infection. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Myths about HIV are investigated with reference to transmission, prevention and treatment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Internal and external stigmas and discrimination associated with HIV are identified with reference to inappropriate use of terminology.

    Explain mother to child transmission.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different ways in which a mother can infect a child are explained with reference to the probability of infection in each case. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ways include during pregnancy, childbirth and breast feeding.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Treatments available for prevention of mother to child transmission are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Birth and feeding options are explained as a means of preventing mother to child transmission. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and their relationship to HIV and AIDS.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different STIs are identified with reference to the signs, symptoms and treatment options of each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Myths associated with STIs are explained with reference to the link to HIV. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relationship between having an STI and HIV is explained with reference to the probability of HIV infection. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The effects of STIs on the body are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The importance of notifying relevant present and past partners when an STI is diagnosed is explained with reference to decisions about future behaviour and protecting others from infection.

    Explain the relationship of Tuberculosis (TB) to AIDS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different types and strains of resistance of TB are identified with reference to signs, symptoms, risks and treatment options. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Strains and types include pulmonary, extrapulmonary, multidrug resistant and extremely drug resistant.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect of TB on the body is explained with reference to the relationship of TB to HIV. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of adherence to the treatment regimen is explained and an indication is given of the consequence of non-adherence. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Problems of diagnosis are explained with reference to the relationship to HIV. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Investigate possible treatment options and programmes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Treatment and programme options for adults available at each stage in the progress of the HIV in the HIV positive individual are explained with reference to the CD4 cell count and viral load. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Treatment and programme options include conventional and traditional medicine, stress management and lifestyle management.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The function and effect of Anti Retrovirals (ARVs) in the body are explained with reference to the different classes and their impact on the immune system, virus production within the immune system and possible side effects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Emergency treatments to prevent infection are explained with reference to needle stick injuries, rape and unplanned high risk sex. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Treatment and programme options available for children at each stage in the progress of the HIV are explained with reference to the importance of adherence, supervision and support.

  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
