PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to plan the movement of door-to-door shipments by analysing exporter documentation. Learners will also be capable of preparing the required documentation and bills of lading in an accurate way. Learners will be able to follow export surface procedures to ensure surface freight is tracked through all modes of transport.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Planning export surface logistics.
  • Documenting surface exports.
  • Facilitating the door to door movement of export surface freight.

    Learners accessing this qualification will be assumed competent in:

    Exporter documentation and instructions are analysed for completeness and compliance.

    Door-to-door movement is planned in accordance with export instructions and cargo requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cargo requirement may include but is not limited to inland vehicle type, container type and vessel type.

    Booking arrangements are effected with transport providers.

    Transport providers may include but are not limited to road and rail operators; depot and terminal operators; seafreight consolidators and carriers.

    Inland transport documentation is prepared in terms of cargo movement type requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Inland transport documentation may include but is not limited to rail/road consignment notes, container terminal orders, shipping orders and cargo dues receipts.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ocean and house bills of lading are prepared in terms of financial instruments and client requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of accurate transport documentation is explained in terms of consequences for the execution of transport movement. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Facilitate the door-to-door movement of export surface freight.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Export surface clearance procedures are carried out in terms of statutory requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Inland transport documentation is lodged with relevant parties to initiate cargo movement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Surface freight exports are tracked from point of origin to container terminal/port using tracking systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Cargo is tracked on board vessel for purpose of dating bills of lading. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Completed export documentation is distributed to relevant parties in terms of export instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Completed export shipments are processed for invoicing purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Claims are initiated in respect of lost, damaged and discrepant cargo.
