PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to explain how the freight forwarder interacts with the parties involved in providing airfreight services to satisfy the needs of importers and exporters.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the role of the freight forwarder in the airfreight environment.
  • Identifying the reasons for using different airfreight services.
  • Explaining how different equipment is used for the handling and transportation of air freighted cargo.

    Explain the role of the freight forwarder in the airfreight environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The respective roles of the international regulatory and industry representative bodies are described in terms of their impact on airfreight forwarding. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The international regulatory and industry representative bodies are the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), The International Air Cargo Association and the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Association (FIATA).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The parties involved in airfreight are identified in terms of moving air freighted cargo door to door. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The roles of the parties involved in airfreight are described in order to identify areas of responsibility. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The forwarder's responsibilities are described from the perspective of planning, organising and controlling the movement of internationally traded cargo. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The purposes of different airwaybills are described in terms of their being the prime airfreight documents. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Airwaybills includes master and house airwaybills.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify the reasons for using different airfreight services. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons for choosing airfreight are explained in terms of satisfying importers' and exporters' requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Buyers' and sellers' respective roles in selecting required airfreight services are identified with reference to the Incoterms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The advantages and disadvantages of the different airfreight services are discussed in relation to importers' and exporters' needs. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Airfreight services includes straight, consolidated and charter.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of using an inappropriate airfreight service are described in terms of the relationship of the importer and/or exporter with the forwarder. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain how different equipment is used for the handling and transportation of air freighted cargo. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Cargo handling and securing equipment is identified for airfreight cargo. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cargo handling equipment includes but is not limited to:
  • Forklifts, gantry cranes, roller beds, slip sheets rope, slings nets, tie downs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The equipment used in flight operations is identified for the unitisation and securing of airfreighted cargo. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment used in flight operations includes, but is not limited to platforms, unit load devices (ULDs), slings, crates, nets, tie downs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The requirements of different cargo types are differentiated in terms of cargo handling and flight operations equipment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cargo types may include but is not limited to general cargo, abnormal cargo, perishable cargo, refrigerated cargo, live animals, human remains and other goods listed by IATA under Class Rates.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain the operation of airports in the airfreight environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The facilities used at airports are identified for airfreighted cargo. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Facilities may include but is not limited to airline and forwarder bond stores, customs facilities, plant and other inspection facilities, cargo collection and handover facilities.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The conventions used to identify international airports are explained in terms of the ISO codes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The method used to route cargo internationally is explained in terms of forwarding procedures.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
