PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who are required to work in a blood transfusion donor clinic environment.

The procurement of safe blood from voluntary, non-remunerated and regular blood donors is critical to the safety of the blood supply for transfusion. The qualifying learner will be able, through knowledge, skills and attitude, to work safely within the field of blood transfusion thus enhancing health care delivery in the country.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of blood transfusion regulations and donor acceptance criteria.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of blood products.
  • Work in a blood donation clinic. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Unit standard 114728: Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology relevant to medical pathology and blood transfusion at NQF Level 4.
  • Unit standard 114730: Comply with safety requirements in the medical pathology or blood transfusion fields at NQF Level 4.
  • Unit standard 114731: Demonstrate knowledge of medical ethical guidelines in the medical laboratory or blood transfusion fields at NQF Level 4.

    Knowledge of the types of tests that are performed on donated blood is demonstrated.

    The different blood products are identified.

    Usage and storage requirements of blood products are described.

    Blood products include but not limited to whole blood, red blood cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, coagulation factors, immunoglobin, albumin, cryoprecipitate.

    The specific procedure required to collect the product is described.

    Autologous, plasmapheresis, cellular, homologous, directed donation, apheresis.

    Educational materials are appropriately organized to ensure the public has maximum exposure to information.

    The clinic is set-up according to workplace protocol.

    The flow of blood donors through the clinic is monitored. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Donor concerns, if any, are addressed according to workplace protocol. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Blood and blood products are stored and transported to a processing facility. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.
