PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for a person who has to operate folding and tucking equipment and equipment associated with folding and tucking in an efficient manner, a factor which will contribute towards the overall efficiency of the organisation.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the folding and tucking equipment.
  • Perform start-up of folding and tucking equipment.
  • Monitor folding and tucking equipment parameters.
  • Monitor and maintain product quality.
  • Perform shut-down of the folding and tucking process.
  • Maintain operational integrity in the folding and tucking area.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the sub-fields of manufacturing and assembly, physical sciences, life sciences, environmental sciences, earth and space sciences.     Description of required skills:
  • This unit standard has been designed as an introduction to the operating of folding and tucking equipment and does not assume prior learning or experience.

    Literacy and mathematical literacy:
  • This unit standard assumes that a learner is already competent in communication and numeracy at NQF Level 2.

    Where learners do not have the relevant expertise, appropriate adjustments must be made to the learning programme.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The context of this unit standard includes monitoring the equipment, performing start-up, shutdown, post shutdown and product change-over procedures while maintaining safety and good housekeeping standards.

    The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process requires a wide range of technical skills and offers a considerable choice of procedures. A broad knowledge base incorporating some theoretical concepts, analytical interpretation of information, informed judgement and a range of sometime innovative responses to concrete but often unfamiliar problems are employed. The application of this unit standard is to qualify the person for certification in advanced trade and technical occupations.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the folding and tucking equipment.

    The purpose of folding and tucking is explained in terms of the total tissue conversion process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The operating principles of folding and tucking equipment are explained in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The principal components of folding and tucking equipment are identified as applicable to the tissue conversion process. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principal components include folding plates, draws, tuckers and tongues, cam track, tucking plates, blade folders, idlers, draw nips, compression rolls/belts, pulleys, sprockets and chains.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The functions of the principal components of folding and tucking equipment are explained as applicable to the tissue conversion process. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform start-up of folding and tucking equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Specified equipment pre-start-up checks are performed in accordance with standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Checks include feed system, availability of services, folding and tucker alignment, air supply, tension gauges, build-ups and plug-ups, web breaks, folding phasing, tucker blade wear, coating/Teflon tape wear and closed folding boards.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The availability of sufficient good quality raw material is ensured in accordance with workplace instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Start-up sequence is performed according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Post start-up checks and tests are performed according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Start-up documentation is completed according to workplace instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The specified operating parameters for folding and tucking equipment are explained in accordance with workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The parameters refer to folding tongue, plate and idler positions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Non-adherence to the prescribed parameters is explained with regards to the consequences to the cutting and slitting operation.

    The operating conditions of the equipment is systematically investigated and assessed against given operating parameters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Utilities used in the process are monitored in accordance with workplace procedures.

    Utilities include white oil, air.

    Deviations from operating parameters are interpreted in accordance with specified requirements.

    Suitable corrective action is suggested for each deviation from prescribed operating parameters.

    The specified product parameters for folding and tucking equipment are explained in accordance with quality specifications.

    The parameters refer to sheet length and width, fold creases and fold overlap.

    Non-adherence to the prescribed parameters is explained with regards to the consequences to product quality.

    Product samples are taken in accordance with workplace procedures.

    Post shutdown functions are performed in accordance with operating procedures.

    Post shutdown functions include cleaning build-ups, remove plug-ups, fixing web breaks remove excess material.

    Processing equipment is cleaned and remaining material is removed from the system.

    Product changeover functions are performed in accordance with workplace instructions.

    Responsibilities include replacing changeover parts, synchronising folding fingers and adjusting folding plates.

    First line maintenance functions are performed in accordance with workplace instructions.
