PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this Unit Standard will understand the importance and practical application of productivity principles in a gas installation project.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Explain the concept of workplace based productivity.
  • Establish increased volume objectives for gas installations.
  • Establish reduced cost objectives for gas installations.
  • Establish improved service or product objectives for gas installations.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of any learner within the gas installations environment, by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field. The knowledge, skills and understanding demonstrated in this unit standard are essential for upliftment, social and economic transformation in the gas installation environment.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against numeracy and literacy at ABET level 4, NQF Level 1 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical context of this unit standard assumes an existing or new domestic or commercial gas installation site.

    The typical scope of this unit standard includes one of the following but is not limited to:
  • LPG installations.
  • Natural gas installations.
  • Compressed gas installations.
  • Medical installations.

    "Productivity" is defined and its purpose and importance in a gas installation environment is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The benefits of improved productivity are explained in terms of its impact on the success of a business. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The impact on the business should include but is not limited to increased volume, improved services and products and reduced costs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The impact of "inputs" on productivity is explained in terms of workplace productivity. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    "Inputs" should include but is not limited to materials, tools, equipment, skills levels, people, knowledge, systems, management, processes and attitudes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The impact of "conversion processes" on productivity is explained in terms of its impact on the workplace. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Conversion processes include preparing a quotation, preparing to perform an installation, different tasks involved in the installation itself, post installation activities and completing final documentation.

    Obstacles for a productive installation environment are described.

    Obstacles include but are not limited to lack of productivity standards, ignorance and misconceptions about productivity, resistance to change, procrastination, risk of failure and interruptions.
