PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to procure and maintain stock levels of equipment and consumables required for gas system installations and maintenance.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Explain stock control concepts in accordance with typical industry practices.
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels.
  • Procure stock for a given period or specific contract.
  • Count and evaluate materials stocked.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of any learner within the gas installations environment, by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field. The knowledge, skills and understanding demonstrated in this unit standard are essential for upliftment, social and economic transformation in the gas installation environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against mathematical literacy and literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

    The typical context of this unit standard assumes an existing or new domestic or commercial gas installation site.

    The typical scope of this unit standard includes one of the following but is not limited to:
  • LPG installations.
  • Natural gas installations.
  • Compressed gas installations.

    A systematic stock information system is maintained in accordance with workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The stock system includes the items in stock, replacement levels, supplier, shelf life and age (where applicable) and condition (new or reconditioned).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All stock items are clearly identified with tags or labels. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Stock is stored in an organised, safe and clean environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Required stock and stock information is accessed within a short space of time.

    Maintain appropriate stock levels.

    Desired stock levels are noted taking stock rotation into consideration.

    Re-ordering policy should take the cost of holding stock, administrative costs and service levels into consideration.

    An itemised bill of materials is compiled based on project requirements or off-take for the given period.

    Possible estimation errors, losses that may occur and market changes are taken into consideration to determine total materials requirements.

    An enquiry is lodged and quotes are obtained from approved suppliers based on total material requirements.

    One or more suppliers are selected based on relevant criteria.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 2 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency.
  • Only an assessor with considerable first hand experience in gas installations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions is required.
