PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to understand gas instrumentation in a gas environment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Understand the general principles of gas instrumentation.
  • Demonstrate understanding of pressure measurement and -gauges.
  • Demonstrate understanding of temperature measurement and -gauges.
  • Demonstrate understanding of flow measurement and -gauges.
  • Demonstrate understanding of level measurement and -gauges.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of any learner within the gas installations environment, by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field. The knowledge, skills and understanding demonstrated in this unit standard are essential for upliftment, social and economic transformation in the gas installation environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against literacy and mathematical literacy at ABET Level 4, NQF Level 1 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical context of this unit standard assumes an existing or new domestic or commercial gas installation site.

    The typical scope of this unit standard includes one of the following but is not limited to:
  • LPG installations.
  • Natural gas installations.
  • Compressed gas installations.
  • Medical installations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The purpose of instrumentation is explained in terms of its measurement, recording and control functions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Instruments should include both local digital- and remote analogue (dial) types.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Gas instrumentation applications are outlined in accordance with accepted industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Basic signal transfer methods are described as applicable to gas installations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Basic instrumentation terminology is used in accordance with accepted industry practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes assigning labels to instrument abbreviations for example PI (pressure indicator), TR (temperature recorder), LIC (level indicator controller).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The concepts and importance of instrument calibration, zero checking, accuracy and reliability are explained as applicable to own workplace.

    Demonstrate understanding of pressure measurement and -gauges.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Pressure gauges are identified and accurate readings are taken in accordance with specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Instruments should include both digital and analogue (dial) types.
  • Gauges used should include absolute pressure, gauge pressure and differential pressure gauges ("U"-tube).
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Measurement units are identified as applicable to the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The distinction between absolute pressure and gauge pressure is explained as applicable to the gas industry.

    Parts and components of pressure gauges are identified and their functions explained in terms of gas installations.

    Operating principles of pressure measurement and -gauges are explained with the assistance of sketches.
