PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for a person working in a chemical manufacturing environment who has the responsibility of applying safety practices and procedures within his/her scope of work.

This unit will contribute to the full development of the learner by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of manufacturing and assembly.
The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth within the chemical manufacturing environment.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Explain relevant safety, health and environment legislation and Company policy.
  • Discuss safe and environmentally correct practices in a manufacturing environment.
  • Maintain personal hygiene and health in a manufacturing environment.
  • Identify sound manufacturing practices.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard is for any person working in a chemically-related manufacturing environment who has the responsibility of applying safety practices and procedures within scope of work. The most pertinent legislation relating to this unit standard is: The Occupational Health and Safety Act (1993) and all relevant regulations and amendments.

    A broad explanation is given of the purpose of legislation related to safety, health and environment as it applies in the context of the operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Chemicals are described in terms of applicable legislation in a way that demonstrates that the operator understands his/her rights and responsibilities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The roles and responsibilities of the safety structures and appointments are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The impact of the Company's health, safety and environmental programmes on the Employer and Employees is discussed with reference to legislation and best practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The purpose, principles and types of work permits are explained in the context of existing legislation and Company requirements.

    Safety appliances, equipment and devices are pointed out, and the consequences of their malfunction are described.

    The impact of poor environmental practices is evaluated and explained with regards to legislation, Company reputation, damage to the environment, and cost.

    Machine safety features are pointed out and their functions explained, with reference to applicable safety legislation and best practice.

    Consequences of poor personal hygiene are explained with reference to contamination of product and fellow worker, in line with enterprise requirements.

    Personal hygiene includes:
  • The use and maintenance of prescribed apparel.

    Sources of contamination that could lead to health hazards are identified and eliminated, in line with standard operating procedures.

    Sources of contamination refer to microbiological (hand washing, open wounds, sickness), chemical and physical sources.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The potential for occurrence of contamination or infectious illnesses in a work environment is discussed, and ways of minimizing the spread of disease are described.

    Identify sound manufacturing practices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Manufacturing procedures that enhance the quality of product and the health and safety of personnel, are described in relation to the work context of the operator. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Manufacturing procedures refer to personal hygiene and safety, cleaning of equipment and workstation, sanitisation (where applicable), maintenance of equipment, and ensuring quality of raw materials, in-process and final product.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Waste and/or by-products from the manufacturing process is handled, stored or recycled, or disposed of in a manner that is environmentally acceptable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Wastewater/sewage and storm water systems are pointed out, and good effluent control practices are described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes:
  • Chemical spill prevention and control, sources of water contamination, connectivity of correct piping systems, effluent pre-treatment.

    Solid waste disposal systems are pointed out and good practices for the disposal of solids are described.

    Gas and/or fume emission treatment systems are pointed out and good practices for the control of gases and/or fumes are described.
