PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to undertake an independent maintenance task on a gas installation at a customer's site.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Plan customer equipment maintenance interaction.
  • Localise and repair faults.
  • Complete equipment maintenance functions.

    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical context of this unit standard assumes an existing or new domestic or commercial gas installation site.

    The typical scope of this unit standard includes one of the following but is not limited to:
  • LPG installations.
  • Natural gas installations.
  • Compressed gas installations.
  • Medical installations.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan customer equipment maintenance interaction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The client is consulted to clarify situation according to employer's policies and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Clarification of the situation should include establishing a basic understanding of the problem, accessing the site, locating the system and any other relevant information, scheduling a suitable time for the maintenance and clarifying fees payable where applicable.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The maintenance function is planned according to the specific job-, client and internal requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Planning may include scheduling, tools, equipment, materials, consumables, other resources and additional or specific assistance required.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The necessary paperwork is completed to prepare for the maintenance task in accordance with company policies and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Paperwork may include job card, work instructions and store requisitions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tools and equipment required to complete the maintenance function are verified based on the job requirements.

    Materials and consumables required to complete the maintenance function are verified based on the job requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Localise and repair faults. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety requirements are studied and adhered to throughout the process using legal-, company- and customer standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The fault is localised using equipment and company fault finding procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment is checked and tested using equipment and company testing procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Checks and tests should include but are not limited to leak testing, pressure tests and gas analyser tests.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment is repaired and/or replaced in accordance with equipment and company maintenance procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Post reparation tests and checks are performed to ensure proper functioning of the system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The rest of the system is closed up and returned to good operating condition in terms of tightening fixings, cleaning equipment, filling gaps and repairing painting.

    Complete equipment maintenance functions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Site is cleared and the housekeeping functions in the work area are completed in accordance to customer requirements and agreement and company policies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Customer maintenance paperwork is completed in accordance with company policies and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Paperwork may include customer invoice, customer sign-off and issuing receipt for payment received.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Customer is advised of repairs done and system operating requirements to be maintained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Own office paperwork is completed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Paperwork may include time sheet, job card sign-off, invoice preparation and stock requisition or re-order instructions.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 3 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency.
  • Only an Assessor with considerable first hand experience in gas installations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions is required.
