PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to apply safety, health and environmental protection procedures during a gas installation.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Explain the responsibilities and liability regarding safety of a gas installation.
  • Prepare for safety and environmental inspections of a gas installation.
  • Conduct safety, health and environmental inspections of gas installation.
  • Respond to inspection findings.

    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

    Explain the responsibilities and liability regarding safety of a gas installation.

    The legal obligations and responsibility of the gas installer are explained in accordance with industry requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The implications of not adhering to safety, health and environmental protection guidelines are explained with examples from the gas installation industry.

    The importance of adhering to housekeeping-, national standard-, local by-law- and environmental guidelines is explained with examples from the gas installation industry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of safety inspections is explained with examples from industry experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The purpose of the specific safety inspection is explained in accordance with legal and company requirements.

    The purpose of the safety inspection may include ensuring safety for commissioning an installation and safety for system maintenance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An inspection procedure, checks and tests to be used are determined according to requirements and safety specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment to be used to perform checks and tests is prepared as per operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Checks and tests should include but are not limited to leak testing, pressure tests and gas analyser.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The area to be inspected is determined as per safety and/ or production schedule. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The area should include the total installation and storage area addressed by the installation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Items to be inspected are determined as stated in the following range. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The items should include the inspection of housekeeping issues, leaks, spillages and emissions, mechanical integrity of equipment, storage practices, good order of fire protection equipment and safety equipment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Information is obtained on the requirements for each of the items to be inspected.

    Conduct safety, health and environmental inspections of a gas installation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A safety, health and environmental inspection checklist is compiled in accordance with relevant requirements and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The inspection checklist is verified against legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An inspection of the designated area is performed in accordance with the requirements of the prepared checklist. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Non-conformances and potential risk areas are identified and listed as per checklist.

    Appropriate corrective action is taken to correct all non-conforming items in accordance with operating procedures.

    The effectiveness of corrective actions is assessed as per checklist.

    A clearance certificate is issued in accordance to legal requirements if area is found to be safe for maintenance.

    A hand-over certificate is issued in accordance with legal requirements if area is safely commissioned.

    Safety certificates are withheld and reasons communicated to client if safety issues outside area of own responsibility are found.

  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 3 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency.
  • Only an Assessor with considerable first hand experience in gas installations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions is required.
