PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners at all levels who lead or aspire to lead groups or teams. It will equip them to be effective team leaders both in the workplace and in the community.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying the qualities of an effective leader.
  • Identifying the leadership style most appropriate in own situation.
  • Identifying basic leadership skills.
  • Applying leadership techniques to a specific group or team. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumes that learners who do this unit standard are competent in Communications at NQF Level 1.

    The typical scope of this unit standard is leadership in a workplace or community context.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the qualities of an effective leader. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The qualities of an effective leader are identified through observation of leaders in own context. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Context includes, but is not limited to sport, recreation, voluntary organisations, community projects, study and work.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Own qualities that indicate an ability to lead are identified based on personal reflection. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relationship between being an effective team or group member and being an effective leader is discussed in own context. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify the leadership style most appropriate in own situation.

    Different leadership styles are described with reference to interaction between the leader and the team.

    The most appropriate leadership style is identified for different situations and an indication is given of own preferred leadership style.

    Communication skills that promote sound interpersonal relationships are demonstrated for different scenarios. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of being able to motivate others is explained with examples.

    Apply leadership techniques to a specific group or team.

    Outcomes of team activities are assessed in order to provide feedback and improve future practice.

    Ways of resolving conflict are demonstrated for a specific situation.
