PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner credited with this unit standard will be able to provide the type of technical support required for planning and scheduling to be developed and maintained on projects. He will also be able to identify the data required, to gather and collate this data and provide the required information in the correct format so that the project plan and schedule can be developed and maintained.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the basic procedures for project planning and scheduling.
  • Explaining the concepts and implications of a critical path and the types of float present in a schedule.
  • Gathering and collating planning and scheduling activity data.
  • Gathering and collating activity resource requirements.
  • Gathering and collating progress information for updating schedule. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Computer Literacy and applicable software at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

    Demonstrate the application of the basic procedures for project planning and scheduling. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Basic Procedures will include but not be limited to Gantt/Bar Charts and Critical Path Analysis. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The methods, components and applications of basic planning and scheduling techniques are described according to international definitions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A given Gantt/Bar Chart is interpreted to establish the level of progress against the baseline. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    To include the principle of a baseline.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The methods and uses of critical path analysis are described according to international definitions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Critical Path Analysis will include but is not limited to Arrow Diagramming Method and Precedence Diagramming Method.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The duration and earliest end date of a project are established from a given schedule, using basic procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and implications of a critical path and the types of float present in a schedule. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Float shall include "Free Float" and "Total Float" in accordance with International convention.

    Relevant activity data is gathered, collated and checked for accuracy and completeness in the required format and time frames.

    The gathered planning and scheduling data is reviewed for completeness and accuracy with the relevant authority.

    The sequence of activities is obtained and recorded in accordance with organisational requirements.

    Gathered activity duration data is processed according to organisational requirements.

    Data pertaining to the types and quantities of resources required is gathered according to organisational requirements.

    Availability of resources within the required time frames is confirmed with the relevant authority.

    The relationship between resource availability and activity duration is explained using an example within the project environment.

    Resource data is recorder according to organisational requirements.

    Progress information will include, but not be limited to:
  • Actual Start dates, percentage completion, Forecast or Actual end dates and resources expended.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Gathered progress data pertaining to the progress achieved on a project is processed according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Missing or erroneous progress data for the project is referred to the relevant authority for resolution within the stipulated time frame. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Collated progress information for the project is transmitted to the relevant parties within the stipulated time frame.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
