PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit will enable learners to have an elementary understanding of the analysis of infrastructure. The learners will acquire knowledge about the transport environment, urban features and industries. In addition to these competencies this unit standards will also allow learners to identify possible vulnerable points in these infrastructures for various purposes.

Qualifying learners will be able to:

  • Analyse urban features.
  • Analyse industry processes.
  • Analyse transport systems.
  • Analyse vulnerable points.

  • Urbanisation: Process of population moving from rural areas to the cities.
  • Urban area: Any city or town classified as such by the Central Statistical Services.
  • Township: Black residential area, also contain functions such as industrial sites and education facilities.
  • Residential area: Areas use for residential functions.
  • Squatter area: Areas in which inadequate housing is concentrated and community functions are unavailable.

    Bridges terminology:
  • Bridge: Construction over river, road, railways, chasm, etc. carrying road, railway or footpath.
  • Culvert: Build underneath a road railway or canal embankment to span a small stream or to provide drainage.
  • Viaduct: Structure over broad depression or valley, usually a series of arcs.
