This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to replace electric motors.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the factors critical to the replacement of electric motors.
  • Prepare to replace an electric motor.
  • Replace the electric motor.
  • Test the motor and prepare for operation and/or production.

    The principle of the operation and functioning of the electric motor, in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of replacing the electric motor, thus showing a clear understanding of the direct consequences to self and the business.

  • Injury to persons, damage to equipment, loss of production time through breakdowns and increased costs.

    The possible critical hazards and substandard conditions that may be encountered while replacing an electric motor in a particular context, as well as how to deal with them so as to be consistent with accepted best practice.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Permission to enter the workplace, when required, is obtained in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The required personal protective equipment is selected, examined and used in a way that is consistent with its purpose, design and specified requirements. Personal protective equipment is used to ensure the safety of persons and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The tools, material and equipment that are required for replacing the electric motor are selected, examined and transported in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The workplace is examined in accordance with specified requirements and any hazardous and substandard conditions are dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The motor to be replaced is identified in accordance with specified requirements.

    The unit is locked out and made safe, and the electric motor is verified to have been electrically disconnected in accordance with specified requirements.

    The consequences that inadequate preparation for the replacement of the electric motor (i.e. not in line with specified requirements and current legislation) may hold for occupational health, safety and production are explained.

    The required personal protective equipment is used in a way that is consistent with its purpose, design and specified requirements. Personal protective equipment is used to ensure the safety of persons and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Work-related hazards are dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. Risks associated with replacing the electric motor are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The process of removing the electric motor is in line with the prescribed procedures for sequence, and is consistent with accepted best practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The process of installing the replacement electric motor is in line with specified requirements for sequence, and tolerance, and is consistent with accepted best practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The process of aligning the electric motor is in line with specified requirements for sequence and tolerance, and is consistent with accepted best practice.

    The electric motor is verified as having been electrically connected in line with accepted best practice.

    Verification of the unit having been made safe so as to ensure that the safety of persons and equipment is protected.

    Test the motor to determine whether it is functioning in accordance with specified requirements.

    Deal with the selected tools, material and equipment in accordance with the specified requirements.

    Clean and clear the workplace so as to be free from hazards, in accordance with specified requirements and good housekeeping practices.

    Compile a report on the work performed, in compliance with the specified requirements for format, content, accuracy and distribution. The report is submitted within the agreed time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Explain the consequences for occupational health, safety and production of not testing the electric motor in line with specified requirements and current legislation.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the learner is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the learner can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
