PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to cut mild steel by means of an Oxy-acetylene cutting torch.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the factors critical to cutting mild steel by means of an Oxy-acetylene cutting torch.
  • Prepare to cut mild steel by means of an Oxy-acetylene cutting torch.
  • Cut mild steel by means of an Oxy-acetylene cutting torch.
  • Complete the mild steel cutting process and prepare for operation and/or production.

    The principle of operation and function of Oxy-acetylene cutting equipment, in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of cutting mild steel by means of an Oxy-acetylene cutting torch, thus showing a clear understanding of the direct consequences to self and the business. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range must include:
  • Injury to persons, damage to equipment, loss of production time through breakdowns and increased costs.

    The possible critical hazards and substandard conditions that may be encountered while cutting mild steel by means of an Oxy-acetylene cutting torch in a particular context, as well as how to deal with them so as to be consistent with accepted best practice.

    The tools, material and equipment that are required for cutting mild steel by means of an Oxy-acetylene cutting torch are selected, examined and transported in accordance with specified requirements.

    The workplace is examined in accordance with specified requirements and any hazardous and substandard conditions are dealt with in accordance with specified requirements.

    The mild steel to be cut by means of an Oxy-acetylene cutting torch is prepared in accordance with specified requirements.

  • Checking for flammable and combustible material and cleaning the mild steel.

    A test for the presence of flammable and harmful gases is conducted in accordance with specified requirements.

    The process of assembling the Oxy-acetylene equipment is in line with specified requirements for sequence and consistent with accepted best practice.

    The ventilation flow at the workplace is verified to be in accordance with specified requirements.

    The consequences that inadequate preparation for the cutting of mild steel by means of an Oxy-acetylene cutting torch (i.e. not in line with specified requirements and current legislation) may hold for occupational health, safety and production are explained.

  • Permission, personal protective equipment, tools, material and equipment, workplace examination, hazardous and substandard conditions, steel preparation, testing for gas, assembling of Oxy-acetylene equipment and ventilation verification.

    Work-related hazards are dealt with in accordance with the prescribed procedures. Risks associated with the cutting of mild steel by means of an Oxy-acetylene cutting torch are explained.

    Clean and clear the workplace so as to be free from hazards, in accordance with specified requirements and good housekeeping practices.

    Compile a report on the work performed, in compliance with the specified requirements for format, content, accuracy and distribution. The report is submitted within the agreed time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Explain the consequences for occupational health, safety and production of not completing the mild steel cutting process in line with specified requirements and current legislation.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the learner is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the learner can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
