PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons involved in the cabling, installation, testing or servicing of electronic systems where elementary electronics is applied. Learners will understand elementary electronic principles, as they are applicable to electronic systems. They will also have knowledge of electric components and electronic equipment.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Apply elementary electrical fundamentals.
  • Demonstrate the application of electronic components used in electronic installations.
  • Use multimeters to perform measurements in electronic circuits.
  • Apply soldering techniques.

    Apply elementary electrical fundamentals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Elementary atomic theory is described in terms of the generation of electric current. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Elementary atomic theory must include but is not limited to matter, molecule, element, atom, ion, polarity.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Electrical and electronic terms are described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Terms must include but are not limited to volt, amp, ohm, coulomb, joules, watts, power, conductors, insulators, direct current, alternating current, series and parallel circuits, Electro-magnetic Force (EMF), capacitance, induction, voltage drop, Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), Electro-magnetic Interference (EMI), impedance, ground loops, electrical earthing, Amp/Hour, frequency.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ohm's law is defined and used to perform electrical calculations in elementary electrical circuits. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Electrical calculations must include but are not limited to resistance, voltage, current and power in electrical circuits.
  • Electrical circuits must include but are not limited to series and parallel circuits. This must also cover the use of resistors and batteries (secondary cells) in series and parallel.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The principle of magnetism is described in terms of electricity. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principle of magnetism may include but is not limited to permanent magnetism, induced magnetism, electromagnetism, magnetic field, and magnetic field strength.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate the application of electronic components used in electronic installations. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Electronic components must include but are not limited to resistors, diodes, light emitting diodes (LEDs), relays, switches, primary and secondary cells (batteries).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Electronic components are identified in terms of their respective values. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    Includes resistor colour codes.

    Electronic components are described in terms of their symbols, functions and uses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Electronic components are used in a simple circuit.

    Reasons for the disposal of obsolete electronic components are described in line with health and safety principles. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Electronic components refer to but are not limited to non-working or scrap electronic components, batteries and printed circuit (PC) Boards.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Proper earthing methods and surge protection are described in line with electrical requirements.

    Use multimeters to perform measurements in electronic circuits.

    The working condition and accuracy of multimeters are checked to determine their serviceability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Function and range on a multimeter are set in line with various testing criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Functions and range refer to voltage, current and resistance modes at difference levels.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Continuity tests on connections using a multimeter are performed to evaluate the results. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A multimeter is used to measure voltage, resistance and current in a circuit.

    Apply soldering techniques.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hazards associated with the use of soldering equipment are described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Hazards must include but are not limited to incorrect soldering iron selection, correct solder type, lead poisoning, fumes, burns and fire.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Solder techniques are used in an application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Characteristics of a good solder joint are described in terms of electrical and mechanical integrity. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Characteristics must include but are not limited to scorching, dirt, oxidisation, colour, residue, electrical and mechanical connection.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Solder joint is inspected for integrity and suitability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Soldering equipment is described in terms of how it should be handled. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Handling refers to but is not limited to the use, cleaning, storing and disposing of soldering equipment.
