PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of the unit standard will be to develop the knowledge and skills of the learner in promoting a culture of literacy and reading in various LIS communities. It will equip learners with understanding of genres and categories of literature and how to apply this understanding to promote literature and reading.

Learners accredited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Identifying and describing genres of literature in typical library collections.
  • Reading and reviewing a wide variety of books.
  • Promoting and supporting literacy and reading in the community.

  • Communication at NQF level 4 or equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and describe genres of literature in typical library collections. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Material includes, but is not limited to:
  • Genres of information and fiction books such as biography, fantasy, realism, graphic novels, picture books; and readership categories of literature such as teenage and young adult books, children's books and books for newly-literate.

    Genres of literature are described in terms of the LIS collection and its community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Characteristics of each genre and category of literature are identified according to the nature of the collection. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Prominent authors within each genre and category are identified in terms of international literature with a focus on South African literature.

    Read and review a wide variety of books.

    Criteria for reviewing books are identified in terms of the various genres of fiction and non-fiction.

    Non-fiction criteria includes, but is not limited to:
  • As authority, date, interest to the community and likely readership.

    Fiction criteria includes, but is not limited to:
  • Plot, characterisation, theme, interest to community and likely readership.

    A portfolio of book review is compiled in terms of a wide variety of genres and/or an identified focus of specialisation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Specialisations include, but is not limited to:
  • African literature, South African literature, children's and youth literature.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ability to identify and select books across a number of genres, age groups, and themes is demonstrated in terms of the range of literature and the community.

    Basic reader advisory services are provided in terms of knowledge of literature in the collection.

    Displays are created in terms of targeted readers and/or theme.

    Readers includes, but is not limited to:
  • Sectors within the LIS user community, local community groups and clubs, ABET classes, youth, unemployed, schools and NGOs.

    Story readings and group talks are presented according to user groups.

    User groups includes, but is not limited to:

    Literacy programmes are supported through promoting reading and writing in relation to all LIS users.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of the integrated competence described in this unit standard.
