PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This Unit Standard is suitable for educators, caregivers and community workers working with adults and children in group, informal, family Early Childhood Development (ECD) settings, etc.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
This Unit Standard is to be understood within the context of the Universal Precautions as defined in the Government Gazette, Department of Education, Volume 410, No. 20372, 10 August 1999 (Notice 1926 of 1999): National Policy on HIV and AIDS for Learners and Educators in Public Schools and Students and Educators in Further Education and Training Institutions. Basic explanations are provided of how the immune system functions and is affected by HIV and AIDS, with particular reference to the progression of HIV in adults and children. |

Four general ways in which HIV can be transmitted are identified, with reference to and clarification of common misconceptions regarding transmission. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The contribution of various factors to the pandemic is described, with particular reference to the impact of the socio-economic context. |
