PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of using the necessary equipment to mix and match paint to the original colour. This will contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in automotive repair and maintenance at NQF Level 3 and related qualifications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for maintaining vehicles in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, power tools, workshop equipment, measuring equipment and to maintain a safe and productive working environment.

All work is performed with little or no supervision in accordance with operational, repair manual specifications and procedures and in compliance with occupational safety, health and environmental legislation. 

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of mixing and matching colours. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Principles of mixing includes colour codes, formulas, viscosity, opacity and air pressure.
  • Principles of matching include visual effects, appropriate lighting, optical illusion (flip tones) and colour spectrum.

    The purpose of paint codes is described in relation to matching of colours. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Methods of mixing paint colours are explained to achieve the required colours. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Mixing of different paints is described in terms of the manner in which different substances combine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The effect of different lighting is explained in relation to observing matched colours. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Angles are explained in terms of optical illusions (flip tones) and how to overcome these.

    Demonstrate knowledge of the functions of matching and mixing equipment.

  • Functions include the paint application, viscosity, mixing ratios, shrinking, solidifying, formula references and quantities.
  • Tools and equipment includes viscosity cups, spray guns, mixing cups, measuring sticks, scale, computer, colour profiles, manuals, sample plates, air supply and personal protective equipment.
