PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people in the automotive engineering industry who are expected to assemble engines and ensure that all external components are attached.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of fuel system components.
  • Prepare to fit fuel system components.
  • Fit fuel system components.
  • Conduct post operation functions.

    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • The ability to use automotive engineering tools and equipment.
  • The ability to start up and hot run an engine.
  • Knowledge of vehicle systems. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • Reference to suitable tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.
  • The practical assessment evidence must be obtained from commercial jobs in the workplace under normal workplace conditions.
  • Engines include multi cylinder 2 and 4 stroke diesel and petrol engines.
  • Fuel system components relate to components that are required to supply fuel to an engine.
  • Fitting components includes fastening, connecting, setting and timing the component.

    Demonstrate knowledge of the functions of fuel system components.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The types of components fitted to different engines are identified in accordance with manufacturer requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The functions of the various components are described in accordance with manufacturer requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not correctly fitting the appropriate components to specific engines are explained in terms of potential damage to the engine and loss of performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety precautions that need to be adhered to in fitting fuel system components to an engine and working with fuels are identified and explained in accordance with safe work practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The method of supplying the correct amount of fuel to the cylinders is explained in accordance with the type of fuel system. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fuel system types include carburetion, fuel injection and forced induction.

    The components to be removed or fitted to the engine are identified in accordance with the job instructions and technical data. All relevant data is obtained prior to starting the work process.

    The tools and equipment required for the task are ensured to be available and ready for use.

    All parts and components required for the job are visually checked for defects in terms of manufacturer specifications.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.

    The following particular issues should be taken into consideration when assessing against this unit standard:
  • The assessment must take place in a fully equipped workshop where all the tools and equipment required for the task are available.
  • The engine performance once it has been started will provide additional evidence of the candidate's ability to fit fuel system components to an engine.
  • Assessment of knowledge components must take place against mechanical and electronic fuel systems for petrol and diesel engines.
  • The practical assessment may take place on any mechanical or electronically injected engine in the field of expertise of the candidate.
