PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of using the necessary equipment to conduct spot repairs. This will contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in automotive repair and maintenance at NQF Level 4 and related qualifications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for maintaining vehicles in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner has already learned to mix and match paint colours and apply metallic 2 coat paint finishes.

All work is performed with little or no supervision in accordance with operational, repair manual specifications and procedures and in compliance with occupational safety, health and environmental legislation. 

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Demonstrate knowledge of spot repairs. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
Spot repairs include solids, metallic, mica and pearl finishes.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
The different types of spot repairs are identified and explained in relation to their use and application. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
The effect of air pressure is described in terms of the visual effect on the end product and size of repair area. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
Light reflection properties of different pigments are described in relation to the matching of existing painted surfaces. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
The effect of viscosity is described in terms of paint atomisation and visual effect on the end product.

The impact of incorrect preparation of repair area is explained in relation to the end product. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
The uses of transparent and opaque pigments in paint are explained in terms of advantages and disadvantages.

The importance of adhering to flash off and drying times are explained in terms of the final finish. 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
Prepare surfaces for spot repairs.

Preparing includes cleaning, sanding, filling and priming.

The extent of damage is analysed in order to determine the applicable type of repair.

Surfaces are levelled to the original profile in accordance with workshop procedures.

Each stage is prepared in accordance with paint and filler manufacturer specifications.

The extent of repair is confined to minimum area requirements in order to affect the repair.

Natural bodylines are identified and their potential use in achieving spot repairs is explained in terms of visual effects.

Tools and equipment required for preparation are identified and used in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
Apply and cure the finishing coat. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Apply includes spray gun control, paint thickness control, flash off times and overlapping.
  • Accelerated curing includes the use of curing lamps and ovens.
  • Methods of paint application include arcing and parallel movements.
  • Finishing coat includes colour coats and clear coat.
  • Blemishes may include fish eyes, orange peel, runs and blisters.
  • Correcting may include sanding and using surface conditioning abrasives.
