PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people in the automotive machining industry who are required to inspect and remanufacture engine connecting rod assemblies if it is deemed possible.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Inspect and test connecting rod assemblies.
  • Prepare to remanufacture connecting rod assemblies.
  • Remanufacture connecting rod assemblies.
  • Conduct post operation functions.

  • Reference to suitable tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.
  • Remanufacture in this unit standard means the inspecting, testing, bushing, and machining operations to make the piston and rod assembly fully and safely operational.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Inspect and test connecting rod assemblies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The connecting rod assembly is identified in accordance with the job instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Connecting rod assembly refers to a set for the engine.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Components are cleaned and decarbonised in an environmentally safe manner to enable an inspection to be carried out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Removable parts and components are removed without causing damage to the part or the connecting rods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An inspection is completed on the condition of the connecting rod assembly, and a report on the feasibility of remanufacturing is given to relevant personnel.

    Visual inspection, precision measuring, alignment check; estimated cost of repair compared with replacement cost.

    The connecting rod is crack tested in accordance with test equipment instructions.

    Connecting rod assemblies are assembled in accordance with manufacturer specifications without damage to components.

    The connecting rod assembly is checked and adjusted for alignment in accordance with alignment equipment and engine manufacturer specifications.

    The remanufactured connecting rod assembly is lubricated, protected against damage and foreign matter, and labelled to ensure identification.

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
