PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of identifying the various types of air and air over hydraulic brake systems and to diagnose and repair system faults and to record and submit a report. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Prepare and position the vehicle. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Preparing includes a visual and physical inspection of the brake systems for faults.
  • Faults include fluid leaks, wrong fluid levels, bent or damaged pipes, leaking seals, brake booster, disc function, worn parts and friction surfaces, leaking master and slave cylinders, pistons and handbrake components, compressor and air regulating valves.

    The braking system is physically inspected for functionality and faults in accordance with repair manual and quality procedures.

    Reasons for inspecting brake systems are explained in terms of identification of faults.

    Reasons for selecting correct tools and equipment are explained in terms of the type of work and productivity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Faults identified are recorded in accordance with workplace and quality procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Diagnose and repair system faults. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Repair includes the replacement of components and parts and adjustments but excludes the machining of master, slave and wheel cylinders, discs and drums.
