PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is able to identify the various types of glass used in vehicles and remove and replace them using the necessary equipment. This will contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in automotive repair and maintenance at NQF Level 3 and related qualifications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for maintaining vehicles in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, power tools, workshop equipment, measuring equipment, auto body repair equipment and to maintain a safe and productive working environment. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The ranges as indicated under the specific outcomes determine the scope and level of this unit standard. All work is performed under supervision at regular intervals and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation. 

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Demonstrate knowledge of the replacement of vehicle glass. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Types of vehicle glass include front and rear screens, side glass, quarter glass and cab sliders.
  • Tooling includes piano wire cutter, wooden wedge, pulling string, suction cups, rubber mallet and an industrial vacuum cleaner.
  • Material includes bonding kit and cleaning material.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different types of vehicle glass are identified in terms of their composition and application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The removal and replacement processes for each type of vehicle glass are explained in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tooling and materials required for the removal and fitment of each type of vehicle glass are identified in accordance with work place procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of correct removal and replacement of vehicle glass is explained in terms of economy, final appearance and operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The purpose of vehicle glass is explained as a support structure to the body shell.

    Determine the extent of work required.

  • Determine includes to identify the tools and equipment required.

    The vehicle glass is fitted and secured in accordance with the manufacturers specifications.

    The vehicle glass is checked for seating and functionality in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    Work is conducted in accordance with agreed time schedules.
