PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to understand liquid-solid and solid-solid separation equipment in a processing environment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of filtration in process applications.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of density separation in process applications.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of electrically based separation process applications.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of solid-solid separation process applications.

    Different types of filtration processes and their applications are described in accordance with specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of filtration processes includes drum filters, bag filters, disc filters, sand filters, activated carbon filters, filter presses and strainers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The advantages and disadvantages of different filtration process types are explained in terms of process applications.

    Symbols used to indicate filtration processes are used in simple freehand drawings.
