PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to receive, handle and store hazardous chemicals safely in a processing environment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Prepare to receive hazardous chemicals.
  • Receive and check chemicals.
  • Handle chemicals safely.
  • Conduct post-handling processes.
  • Store hazardous chemicals for production requirements.

    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against numeracy and literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.

    Learners accessing this Unit Standard will have demonstrated competence against the Unit Standard "Interpret material safety data sheets (MSDS) in order to address chemical safety in the workplace".

    Prepare to receive hazardous chemicals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn in a manner that protects personnel and products, and complies with organisational policy and legislation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    PPE includes gloves, face masks, goggles, overalls, sleeve protectors, safety boots/shoes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety equipment and accessories are ready and available for the period of chemical handling, and their uses explained in the event of fire, spillages and leakages. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment for use in handling chemicals is clean, operational and fit for purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The work environment is clean and free from potential hazards to personnel, product, plant and environment, in accordance with operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Personnel affected by preparation of chemicals are notified within a timeframe that promotes workplace and team safety.

    Integrity of packaging is checked according to instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Condition of chemicals is matched against specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Chemicals are quarantined according to MSDS guidelines and/or returned where leaks occurred or where packaging is compromised. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Quantities received are accurately matched to the documented requirements.

    Deviances noted are reported as per procedure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Chemicals are handled in a manner that maximises operator and product safety in accordance with standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Correct handling equipment: Pipes and pipe fittings, tanks, pumps, meters, hoses, containers, conveyors and lifting apparatus.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Chemicals are used in compliance with their intended purpose and usage instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Wastage is kept to a minimum and spillages are removed using the appropriate method for the chemical in question, with due regard to storm water and effluent systems. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Conduct post-handling processes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Used equipment and materials are cleaned, disposed of or stored so that they do not pose a threat to the safety of personnel, plant or environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The consequences of incorrect materials disposal are explained with reference to the impact on people, plant and environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The handling process carried out is reviewed against the knowledge of chemical handling in order to identify discrepancies between theory and practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The work area is cleaned and restored to its pre-handling state, as per requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The status of chemical handling is reported to appropriate personnel and is in the required format.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Storage of chemicals is in line with safety legislation and standard operating procedures, and storage space used in accordance with company stock holding policies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stored chemicals are clearly labelled and have accurate date coding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All documentation relating to storage is accurate and complete, in line with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Incorrect chemical storage is discussed with reference to impact on housekeeping, downtime, safety and quality.
