PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to work with extra low and low voltage systems in a safe manner and carry out basic services in a safe manner.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating knowledge of Marine extra low and low voltage electrical systems.
  • Operating extra low voltage electrical systems.
  • Operating and carrying out basic servicing of starter motors, alternators and associated equipment.
  • Following safety and hazard control procedures.

    Learners accessing this unit standard will be assumed competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to safely operate and carry out routine basic servicing of extra low voltage and low voltage electrical systems and be aware of the safety precautions when using 50 volt systems used on a small commercial vessel, including operation and service checks of systems, basic care and servicing of batteries and charging systems and basic operation and servicing of starter motors, alternators and associated equipment.
  • Note: All installation, maintenance and repair of AC (50 volts or above) DC (above 115 volts) must be carried out only by a suitably qualified engineer or licensed tradesman. Relevant electrical licensing requirements must be fulfilled by any persons carrying out installation, maintenance and repair of electrical circuits and systems at such voltages on a vessel.
  • Extra Low Voltage systems may include those typically found on a small commercial vessel.
  • Basic servicing may include: routine checks of systems and equipment; identification and reporting of faults and arranging for repair or replacement.
  • Documentation/records may include: vessel and company servicing procedures for Extra Low Voltage systems; equipment manufacturer's instructions, specifications and procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Various types of extra low and low voltage systems are identified and an explanation given of their functions are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Various types of starter motors, alternators and associated equipment are identified and an explanation given their functions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Operate extra low and low voltage electrical systems. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Extra low voltage and low voltage systems may include:
  • Lead acid batteries; circuit breakers; wiring; switches and lights; starter motors and alternators. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The extra low and low voltage electrical systems are safely operated in accordance with procedures and manufacturer's instructions and specifications and within the limits of responsibility. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Precautions taken when operating 50-volt electrical systems are appropriate in accordance with established company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The basic servicing of extra low and low voltage systems is carried out in accordance with vessel's procedures, and within the limits of responsibility and skill authority. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Operate and carry out basic servicing of starter motors, alternators and associated equipment. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Servicing tasks include:
  • Operating main switches; identifying switches; changing a fuse; checking and replacing a blown lamp; testing and checking a battery; reading basic ammeters; checking navigation lights; repairing loose wires; identifying and fixing bad connections; ensuring batteries are properly vented/no gas build up; identifying and fixing battery leaks; checking that wiring in correctly connected; checking belt tension on an alternator. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The operation of starter motors, alternators and associated equipment is monitored in accordance manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Faulty equipment and components are identified and are reported according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Action is initiated for isolation, tagging and repair or replacement consistent with the fault, and in accordance with the limits of responsibility and skill. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tools are selected according to the nature of the task, and are used in accordance with design and purpose. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tools may include but are not limited to screw drivers, pliers, cutters, soldering iron; meters and instrumentation; protective clothing and equipment such as: eye and ear protection; head gear and safety boots.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Follow safety and hazard control procedures.

    Safety precautions and regulations are adhered to when operating and servicing extra low voltage and low voltage systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Operational hazards are identified and action is taken to minimise or eliminate risk to personnel, vessel and the environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Authorisation is obtained for maintenance tasks in confined spaces. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Procedures and precautions necessary for entry into confined spaces on a vessel are followed according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Action to be taken in the event of an electrical failure or emergency is explained in terms of the nature of the failure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Electrical failure or emergency involving starter motors, alternators and extra low voltage electrical systems.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Shipboard emergency and contingency plans are explained with examples pertaining to starter motors, alternators and extra low voltage electrical systems.
