PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge of and operate refrigeration equipment encountered on board a vessel and able to identify and respond to deviations from normal operating conditions. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners accessing this Unit Standard will be assumed competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • This unit standard is for people working on or intending to work on board a commercial vessel.
  • All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented vessel safe ships management procedures for personal, product and vessel safety, and obligations required under current legislation.
  • Refrigeration systems may include but are not limited to:

    > Direct expansion.
    > Ice making machines.
    > Blast freezer.
    > Vapour compression.
  • Refrigeration types may include but are not limited to:

    > Grid.
    > Plate.
    > Air cooler batteries.
  • Can demonstrate competence by oral examination, completion of approved education and training, written theoretical examination and assessment of evidence obtained from one or more of the following:

    > Approved in-service training.
    > Approved training ship.
    > Approved simulator training.
    > Approved laboratory equipment training.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of refrigeration equipment encountered on board the vessel.

    The refrigeration system is described in line with the manufacturer's design information or relevant documentation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Key parts of the refrigeration system are identified and described in terms of the purpose of each. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Key equipment items may include but are not limited to dryers, filters, evaporators, site glasses, condensers, oil separators, expansion valves, temperature regulator valves, regulators, air cooler batteries, liquid receivers, compressors and safety devices, expansion hold coils, low pressure receivers, liquid receivers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Loading and unloading mechanisms of the system are described and explained in line with the manufacturer's design information or relevant documentation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Different types of refrigerating agents are described and explained in terms of their properties, potential hazards and use. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ammonia, fluorocarbons, carbon dioxide, ice.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Safety precautions are explained in terms of potential hazards and the prevention and injury to self, others and the environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cleanliness, ventilation, eye protection, gloves, protective clothing, working with pressurised systems, moving parts, heating components, transfer and storage of refrigerant, electrical hazards.

    Operate refrigeration equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment is operated in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety procedures are followed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and the vessel's safety management procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The equipment is monitored to maintain product quality in accordance with the vessel and manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Preventative maintenance and routine procedures are carried out in accordance with vessel and manufacturer's operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preventative maintenance and routine procedures may include but are not limited to monitoring, log keeping and lubrication.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Control systems for refrigeration equipment used on board the vessel are identified and their operation described in terms of the factors impacting on operating parameters. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Parameters may include but are not limited to flow, pressure, temperature, level.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify and respond to deviations from normal operating conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Deviations from normal operating conditions are identified, and reported in accordance with the vessel and manufacturer's operating procedures. Consequences of deviations are explained in terms of impact on product quality. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Deviations may include but is not limited to pressure, temperature, cycle times.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment protection systems are identified and explained in terms of their purpose and equipment life. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Protection systems may include but are not limited to trip systems, overpressures relief, compressor surge control.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment malfunctions are identified and responses are made appropriate to the context and in line with vessel and manufacturer's operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Malfunctions may include but are not limited to leakages, freeze up, liquid carry over, equipment failure, blocked strainers, non-condensables and water in the system, over and undercharge, high liquid level in low pressure system.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
