The person credited with this unit standard will be able to adjust and position crayfish traps to optimise the catch in a safe and organised manner.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safe Working Practices are implemented in accordance with the Code of Safe Working Practices for fishing vessels. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Consequences for not adhering to or obeying to the Code of Safe Practices for fishing vessels are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Organise a work area to adjust the crayfish traps. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A safe work area is identified and aspects affecting safety and efficiency are rectified in accordance with enterprise procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Instructions are given to the crew and cover the task and methods to be used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools and equipment appropriate to the task are selected for adjusting traps. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Adjust crayfish trap components to optimise the catch. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Components may include bridles, toggles and lashings; floats; flag poles; lines; ballast; bait and bait holding devices; trap material and frame; by-catch reduction devices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Trap components are observed to obtain information on effectiveness of performance. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Observation may need to cover species composition of catch; quantity of catch per unit effort; quantity of catch in comparison to other vessels; wear of and damage to net components; quality of by-catch reduction systems.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reasons for sub-optimal performance of traps are explained in accordance with enterprise procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Sub-optimal performance is identified and rectified in accordance with enterprise procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Trap components are adjusted, reconditioned or constructed to optimise gear performance in accordance with enterprise procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reconditioning may include tightening of trap frames, stretching of material, re-splicing of ropes, replacement of bait.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Position traps to optimise the catch. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A fishing strategy is developed taking into account all relevant factors. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors may include current, wind, depth, tide, proximity to appropriate fishing ground (rock, gravel, sand, or mud; steepness; bottom growth), proximity of other vessels, excessive by-catch, bait species, predators and other disturbances.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The position of the traps is monitored and altered to optimize the catch in accordance with the fishing strategy and enterprise procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Monitoring may need to cover vertical and horizontal trap rope angle; trap position in relation to target fishing site; visual and electronic position fixing methods; use of electronic detection methods (echo sounder and/or sonar).

    The positioning of the vessel during trap deployment is explained with examples.
