PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to identify and explain ship machinery and systems. They are also able to describe the construction and operation of diesel, refrigeration, engineering pumping, steering and electrical systems of a vessel. The person will also be able to describe problems and corrective action needed to rectify the problem related to any of the ship's systems.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying ship's machinery and systems.
  • Explaining the basic construction and operation of the ship's diesel engines.
  • Explaining the basic construction and operation of the ship's refrigeration system.
  • Explaining the basic construction and operation of the ship's main engineering pumping systems.
  • Explaining the basic construction and operation of the ship's steering gear.
  • Explaining the basic construction and operation of the ship's electrical systems.

    Learners accessing this Unit Standard will be assumed competent in:

    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • In compliance with current Maritime Legislation, Codes and Practices, the scope of this unit standard covers knowledge of the terms in the machinery spaces, basic construction and operation of equipment and propelling machinery as required by an engine room watchkeeper, on board a seagoing vessel.
  • This unit standard involves SAMSA's draft amendments to the Code for SA Maritime Qualifications: Study matrices and syllabuses for fishing and marine motorman qualifications - Engineering Knowledge, Module 1, Identification of machinery or equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify ships machinery and systems. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Machinery and systems may include but are not limited to small and medium speed diesel engines, refrigeration machinery, bilge system, fire main system, fuel bunkering system, steering gear, generators, alternators, battery sets, switchboards, air vessels and air compressors.

    The general technical specifications of each piece of machinery and system are described. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the basic construction and operation of the ship's diesel engines. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Construction and operation includes but is not limited to:
  • 4 and 2 stroke diesel engines, the cooling water system, lubrication oil system, fuel system, scavenge air system, starting system, reversing arrangements.

    Individual parts and systems of diesel engines are identified and an explanation given of their functions.

    The general technical specifications of each part and system of a diesel engine.

    Preparation and starting procedures for the diesel engine are explained with a practical demonstration. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The running checks and stopping procedures are described in accordance with standard procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Corrective action required during preparation to start, starting, running and stopping the diesel engines are explained in accordance with standard procedures.

    Explain the basic construction and operation of the ship's refrigeration system.

    Individual parts of the refrigeration system are identified and an explanation given of their function. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The general technical specifications of each part of the refrigeration system are described with examples.

    How to prepare the refrigeration system for starting is explained in accordance with standard procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Starting and stopping procedures and running checks are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Corrective action required during preparation to start, starting, running and stopping are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain the basic construction and operation of the ship's main engineering pumping system. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Construction and operation includes but is not limited to:
  • Bilge, fire main, deck wash, fuel bunkering piping, Reciprocating, centrifugal, mono and gear pumps, the different types of valves onboard e.g. gate, non-return, screw down, butterfly.

    Corrective action required during preparation to start, starting, running and stopping of the pumping system are explained with examples.

    Explain the basic construction and operation of the ship's steering gear.

    Individual parts of the steering gear are identified and an explanation given of their functions.

    The operation of the steering gear is explained in accordance with standard procedures.

    The emergency steering procedure is explained with examples of when it is used.
