PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners within the electrical, mechanical or related fields who are responsible for monitoring bearing performance and conducting routine bearing maintenance.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of bearings.
  • Monitor bearing performance.
  • Conduct basic bearing maintenance (lubrication).
  • Comply with Occupational Health, safety and environmental requirements.
  • Report on bearing condition, performance and non-compliances.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Basic Hand Tools and Techniques at NQF Level 2.

    Significant hazards and risks are identified and dealt with in accordance with specified requirements.

    Bearing performance is monitored both on a systematic and ad hoc basis. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Sensory perceptions include hearing, sight, smell and feel are applied to pick up bearing defects and/or
    non-conformances.

    Defects are recorded, reported and/or dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Conduct basic bearing maintenance (lubrication) in accordance with maintenance requirements and manufacturers specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The need to lubricate bearings, as well as the impacts of over- or under lubrication, is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance and impact of using the specified lubricant is explained in terms of bearing performance and life. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The workplace (site) is prepared to ensure that effective lubrication can take place. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The required type of lubricant is prepared for application as per specified requirements.

    The bearing is lubricated in accordance with specified requirements.
