PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills required to keep AC motors and DC motors and generators in a serviceable condition by carrying out testing and maintenance work on them. The testing and maintenance activities are performed during the operation of the lift or escalator. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare to test and maintain motors and generators.
  • Locate faults on motors and generators.
  • Restore the installation to a safe working condition.
  • Complete the testing and maintenance tasks.

    Learners credited with this unit standard also know and understand:
  • Applicable safety requirements, worksite procedures and company standards and their application.
  • Principles, concepts and issues relevant to testing and maintaining motors and generators and their application in practice.

    The skills, knowledge and values reflected in this unit standard form part of the Exit Level Outcomes required for the Further Education and Training Certificate: Lift Installation and Maintenance. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following competencies are assumed:
  • Communication and Literacy, NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy, NQF Level 3.

    The credit allocation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in the following outcomes in the context of the lift installation and maintenance industry:
  • Apply and maintain all aspects of safety.
  • Work with electrical and mechanical components.

    The allocation of credits also assumes that the learner will be following a learning programme which integrates the required unit standards. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • The AC motors referred to in this unit standard include three-phase induction and single phase induction motors.
  • The DC motors and generators include series, shunt and compound motors and generators.
  • Maintenance of motors and generators will include the changing of bearings.
  • Statutory requirements include but are not limited to OHS Act, relevant SANS specifications and local authority requirements.
  • All activities are performed under the supervision of a competent person. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare to test and maintain an AC motor and DC motors and generators. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Manufacturer's specifications and maintenance documentation is reviewed to determine the task to be carried out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Resources are obtained and checked for serviceability in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Resources include documentation, tools, testing and measuring equipment, safety equipment and consumable materials.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The work area is prepared for testing or maintenance and public safety is maintained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Maintaining public safety includes tagging and locking out and installing warning signs in accordance with statutory and worksite requirements.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Necessary tools and materials are assembled and are on hand to meet the requirements of the task.

    Check for faults and locate defects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Serviceability is determined in accordance with routine maintenance procedures, maintenance documentation and manufacturer's specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Procedures include visual inspection, troubleshooting, assessment, testing.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Testing procedures are appropriate for motors or generators and the testing equipment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Appropriate inspection and testing includes but is not limited to operation, wiring, connections, terminals, fuses, switches, brushes, mounting bolts, commutator, lubrication, bearings, vibration, arcing, overheating.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All faults and defects are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Faults and defects are recorded in accordance with company procedures and statutory requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Faults are identified and recorded according to company and statutory requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Ensure the operation of the motor or generator is in accordance with the design specifications. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Ensuring operation within its design specification will include the renewal of bearings.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Manufacturer's specification, company procedures and statutory requirements are consulted to determine the methods of rectifying defects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Replacement parts are procured and verified as authentic and serviceable in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Defects are rectified in accordance with manufacturer's specifications, company procedures and statutory requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Rectifying defects includes renewal of bearings; procedures include: repair, replacement, modification and adjustment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The installation is tested to verify serviceability in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and statutory requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Correct procedures are followed to refer motors and generators for repair. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Routine maintenance is performed on motors and generators according to manufacturer's specifications and, where applicable, in accordance with statutory requirements.

    Complete the repair and maintenance tasks.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The operation of all safety requirements is checked and tested in accordance with statutory requirements.

    The work area is restored to a safe and serviceable condition. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Restoring to a safe and serviceable condition refers to cleaning, checking and storing tools and equipment; disposing of waste in an environmentally friendly manner.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Routine maintenance resources are checked for serviceability and stored in accordance with company procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of a relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), which has jurisdiction over this field of learning. The policies and procedures of the relevant ETQA will also determine:
    > How the assessment is moderated.
    > How a learner can appeal against the outcome of the assessment.
  • Any institution or company which offers learning to achieve the purpose of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
  • The integrated assessment should be based on a summative assessment guide. The guide will specify how the assessor will assess different aspects of the performance and will include:
    > Evaluating evidence in a portfolio of evidence, particularly projects which integrate various aspects of the unit standard and which demonstrate the integration of knowledge, skills and values, and the development of the critical outcomes.

  • Assessment of competence for this unit standard is based on experience acquired by the learner in the workplace, within the particular lift or escalator context. The assessment process should cover the explicit tasks required for the unit standard as well as the understanding of the underpinning concepts and principles.
  • The assessment process should also establish how the learning process has advanced the Critical Cross-field Outcomes.
  • Learners may choose in which language they want to be assessed. This should be established as part of a process of preparing the learner for assessment and familiarising the learner with the approach being taken.
  • Assessors should also evaluate evidence that the learner has been performing consistently over a period of time.
  • The assessment for this unit standard can be done in conjunction with the assessment of other unit standards related to a qualification, and in conjunction with the assessment for the qualification as a whole.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES 
    Terms used in this qualification are defined as follows:
  • 'Lift' means any permanent lifting installation used for the conveyance of persons, persons and goods or access goods only lifts by means of a conveyance or platform running on a fixed guide or guides and serving landings.
  • The term 'lift' as used in this qualification is interchangeable with the term 'elevator'.
  • 'Escalator' means a power driven inclined stairway with moving steps and handrails intended for the transportation of persons from one level to another.
  • Where this qualification refers to 'escalator', this includes 'passenger conveyors and moving walkways', which refer to equipment which transports persons from one point to another either horizontally or at an inclined angle.
  • 'Competent person' means a person who has completed a learnership in the trade of lift mechanic or has completed an accepted associated trade training and who has had one year's post-qualification general practical experience on lifts.
