PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills required to commission lift equipment to ensure its safe operation in accordance with specifications. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Make final adjustments to lift equipment (as defined in unit standard range).
  • Check and test the operation of all safety devices.
  • Set performance/operating parameters for lift equipment.
  • Discuss and explain the purpose and requirements of the commissioning documentation.

    Learners credited with this unit standard also know and understand:
  • Applicable safety requirements, worksite procedures and company standards and their application.
  • Principles, concepts and issues relevant to the commissioning of lift equipment and their application in practice.

    The skills, knowledge and values reflected in this unit standard form part of the Exit Level Outcomes required for the Further Education and Training Certificate: Lift Installation and Maintenance. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following competencies are assumed:
  • Communication and Literacy, NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy, NQF Level 3.

    The credit allocation of this unit standard is based on the assumption that the learner is already competent in installing the main components of a lift. The allocation of credits also assumes that the learner will be following a learning programme which integrates the required unit standards. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • Lift equipment refers to: an AC two-speed relay-based control system and a geared machine up to and including 1mps (metres per second), overload protection devices, door operators, slow down switches, shaft information, limits, door protection devices, buttons, indicators, visual displays, governors, buffers, brakes, emergency lighting and safety gear. The learner will be required to demonstrate competence in the commissioning of all lift equipment listed.
  • This unit standard does not include the completion of final commissioning documentation, which is the responsibility of the commissioning engineer, although the learner is expected to know about this documentation.
  • Statutory requirements include but are not limited to OHS Act, relevant SANS specifications and local authority requirements.
  • Work instructions are completed according to manufacturer's technical information, worksite procedures and drawings.
  • Public safety is achieved by appropriate prevention of public access to the worksite (if applicable) by the use of safety barriers, sign boards or notices.
  • Relevant commissioning documentation for lift equipment includes manufacturer's technical commissioning information and data collection sheets.
  • Test equipment includes but is not limited to multimeters, tachometers, relevant hand tools, insulation resistance testers.
  • Commissioning will include static balancing and full load running tests.
  • Adjustment may require the removal and replacement of lift components.
  • All activities are performed under the supervision of a competent person.

    Defects are identified and repaired according to manufacturer's specifications.

    All electrical cables are connected according to the electrical diagram and the manufacturer's specifications.

    Information is recorded in accordance with company procedures and statutory requirements.

    The purpose of commissioning the equipment is explained in terms of legal and safety requirements.

    The documentation associated with the commissioning process is described and its purpose and importance are explained.

    The importance of accurately completing documentation is explained in terms of legal responsibility. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The completion of commissioning tasks is reported and issues are resolved with the competent person. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of a relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), which has jurisdiction over this field of learning. The policies and procedures of the relevant ETQA will also determine:
    > How the assessment is moderated.
    > How a learner can appeal against the outcome of the assessment.
  • Any institution or company which offers learning to achieve the purpose of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
  • The integrated assessment should be based on a summative assessment guide. The guide will specify how the assessor will assess different aspects of the performance and will include:
    > Evaluating evidence in a portfolio of evidence, particularly projects which integrate various aspects of the unit standard and which demonstrate the integration of knowledge, skills and values, and the development of the critical outcomes.
    > Observing and listening to the learner at work, both in primary activities as well as in other interactions, or in relevant simulations.
    > Asking questions and initiating short discussions to test understanding and to verify other evidence.
    > Looking at records and reports.

  • Assessment of competence for this unit standard is based on experience acquired by the learner in the workplace, within the particular lift context. The assessment process should cover the explicit tasks required for the unit standard as well as the understanding of the underpinning concepts and principles.
  • The assessment process should also establish how the learning process has advanced the Critical Cross-field Outcomes.
  • Learners may choose in which language they want to be assessed. This should be established as part of a process of preparing the learner for assessment and familiarising the learner with the approach being taken.
  • Assessors should also evaluate evidence that the learner has been performing consistently over a period of time.
  • The assessment for this unit standard can be done in conjunction with the assessment of other unit standards related to a qualification, and in conjunction with the assessment for the qualification as a whole.

  • 'Competent person' means a person who has completed a learnership in the trade of lift mechanic or has completed an accepted associated trade training and who has had one year's post-qualification general practical experience on lifts.
