PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable the learner to apply intermediate aural and musical listening techniques (See supplementary information) to transcribe musical pieces.

This unit standard will contribute to the development of the learner within the music field by providing recognition, mobility and portability within the various sub-fields of economic activity in the music industry. The skills, knowledge and attitudes embedded within this unit standard are essential for creating a solid foundation to function in the field of music.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Identifying and interpreting chords.
  • Identifying and applying intervals and common diatonic chord progressions.
  • Demonstrating melodic and rhythmic dictation.
  • Transcribing basic lead sheet.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and interpret chords. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Major and minor, triads, augmented, diminished and suspended forth chords and their respective inversions are identified and their differences noted according to industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Major, minor, augmented diminished and suspended forth triads and their respective inversions are sung using any recognised notation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Spelling (example: C- would represent C minor) of above chord symbols are identified and noted according to industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Note values specified by provider are used to write the chord tones of melodic and harmonic scales. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify and apply intervals and common diatonic chord progressions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Associated melodic degrees as well as the intervals 1-8 of well-known songs are learnt and sung using any standard notation according to industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Intervals are aurally recognised and noted according to industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Common chord progressions are identified and notated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Chord progressions when played in any inversion are recognised.

    Demonstrate melodic and rhythmic dictation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Four bar melodies are sight read. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Melodies includes, but is not limited to: note values of a semibreve, minim, crochet and Quavers, keys C, G and F major using sol-fa for example.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A metronome is used at industry recognised tempo. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Four bar rhythms are sight read. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Rhythms include, but is not limited to: note values of a semibreve, minim, crochet and Quavers.

    Transcribe basic lead sheet.

    A basic song/piece is transcribed according to industry standard and provider specification.

    Pitch and rhythm are recognised and correctly used.

  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of level 4 qualification in the sub-field of music.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessment of this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
